Still hurting after nerve block

It has been about a month since I had the nerve block at L5 both sides and the area where the needle went is still sore along with another spot lower down the nerve. Even though I have had quite a bit of pain relief in general, I don't like the side effect of the injection. Im sure the doctor hit the nerve a bit hard or something as it won't let up. My specialist wants me to have S1 injected as well but I'm not sure now. All the treatments help a bit but in the long term I don't really benefit much. It is a real pain in the butt literally, but I am not getting as much sciatica as I was. It is so confusing and just makes me feel like I will be like this forever, slowly getting worse every year.
I washed my car this morning and it was a real big job for me. Painful and exhausting in the heat. But it was so dirty and no one else has offered. So I had a swim after that then a sleep. I can only do one job a day if that, but at least I can get out of the house for a bit. It can be so depressing on my own all day. So I try to keep occupied with playing guitar or watching a movie.
I hope you all have a good Xmas, I will try not to wine to much to anyone over the break and stay as confident as I can that one day someone will be able to help me improve instead of getting worse next year. Allan

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

Hi Allan. I have had many nerve blocks and ESI's only to make the pain much worse and unbearable for weeks. I've only had one epidural out of all the injections work for my pain an it was only for a week. The rest have been absolutely awful as I've had them on each level of my neck, both sides and repeated 2 or 3 times. I've also had the surgery to decompress one out of the three discs due to it pressing on my spinal cord. It did not help the pain. Your lucky to even get relief from any of the injections.

I know what you mean, by only getting one job done a day. That is where I'm at too. It's been that way since the onset of my injury. It's tough to live with it and accept it. Most days I sit on the couch or lay in bed with an ice pack glued to my neck. I had to give up running 36 miles a week and exercise was my passion.

If you have good pain management, stay with them. If your unhappy with your care, most definatly get a second or third opinion. Feel free to wine or vent all you want. We are here for your support.

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

Thanks Nicole for your response I have just been confused about these injections. I had the first nerve root injection for the orthopaedic surgeon so he could see if the nerve at that level was giving me the problems in my thighs and legs and the first one on the left side at L5 did help quite a lot so I thought that if I have the both sides again that would give relief for another month or so, but the second time the doctor seemed to have trouble getting into the right spot. So although it has helped somewhat it seemed to stir up the nerve and I have this pain in my bottom and at the spot of the injection.
The thing with pain is that it is always changing and is hard to find the cause. In the last 12 months my pain has gone from localised in the centre of my lower back, to now where I am having sciatica and can be anywhere from my waist down.
I am sorry to hear about your neck pain as I have not experienced pain in that area, but I do have problems between my shoulder blades. I can normally have someone crack that back into place though. That is normally caused by bad posture so I have to be conscious of that.
I just had an argument with my sister, it seems I am not showing enough appreciation for staying with them. I know I do get a bit selfish at times but she doesn't know what I go through every minute of the day. It is easy to forget that she does a lot for me and I am not giving enough back. I just have trouble getting through each day. So I am going to have to do more around the house to help. Chronic disease causes so much change in a persons personality and I can get caught up in my own little world.
Hope to hear from you again. Allan

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

I've had bad experiences with injections by other than anaesthesiolgists...

Fortunately my currrent doctor is pain treatment anaesthesiology specialist..

My worst was an attempt at TPI by an LPRN.

Usually with Trigger Point injections I x=can direct them directly to the spot if they take it slow and pay attention and it's obvious when they get it right by my bodies reaction... about 9.9 on a pain scale.

I'd ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist that has more experience or training... just be honest about your bad reaction and lack of trust..

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

Yes you certainly know when they hit the nerve or the right spot. I have had probably a hundred facet joint injections but now it is new to me having the nerve compression and sciatica. I now know what people were talking about with the nerves being effected. Some days I am in pain from the waist down but find it hard to narrow it down to a particular spot. I still have the twinge or stabbing pain in my lower back if I move the wrong way. Thanks. Allan

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

I made an appointment to see my specialist before new year to maybe have some more injections. I don't know if I should try the facet joint ones again or let him do S1 nerve block that he suggested. I am not sure if there is any problem there but I suppose there is only one way to find out. Maybe having all those nerve roots injected might give me some relief for the new year. My brother is coming up from Sydney especially to take me fishing in the boat and I really hope I am going to be able to cope with the extra pain caused when I go out boating.
I am somewhat depressed to night after the argument with my sister, I know she means well but when you don't experience chronic pain and depression it is impossible for anyone to understand. It's like going through a divorce, you just don't understand until it happens to you.
I hope you all have a good Christmas and new year. I know a lot of us struggle at this time of year. I have this visit to look forward too and
I have to somehow get out to buy some gifts so maybe I can try to enjoy giving. I don't really feel up to it but I have to try. I have not been out much lately as depression has got me a bit now. I can only try. I have been playing some guitar as that is a good distraction and it is good to learn some new songs.

Completelly, totally. No one knows what it means to live with chronic pain other those who live with it. We tend to concentrate on the pain all the time nothing else interest us than getting rid of this pain we have. There is NOWAY your sister will understand that. noway. you can explain and explain it won't change this.

I refused those injections, nerve blocks etc. I only take meds.
As I told you before, and I won't say it again, you should try gabapentin(neurontin). I know you've tried lyrica. I've also took lyrica it was horrible, really horrible. (I suffer from chronic neck pain). I'm on 800mg neurontin a day. I don't think that amount will cost so much in australia. Worth the try though.

For example, I also take Oxycontin and percocet and there are days (like today)it was sunny I didn't need to take Oxycontin or Percocet. So this combination doctors give us: Gabapentin, Oxycontin and Percocet is not too bad.

all the best get better soon.

I take 40mg of Oxicontin twice a day and Celebrex, endone and valium when I have too and Paracetamol at least 2,000mg a day, sometimes more. I also swim most days as we have a pool now.

I still have this pain in my but from the injection I think. A bit different than the sciatica I was experiencing before then. I think the gabapentin would help.

I did ask my doctor before I saw the surgeon and she said she could not script that for me and that the surgeon would. He gave me one script of Lycira that cost $110. The next time I saw him I forgot to ask him and he didn't mention it. Now that I am paying for health insurance ($200 a month) they won't assist me with any pre-existing problem for 12 months so I can't afford to pay for both anyhow. I think they will pay $500 a year towards that type of medication from next year. So it seems that I won't be able to have any gabapentin at least until next November. I will ask my specialist tomorrow and see how he can help but I am not expecting much. I won't be seeing a surgeon until next November unless something gets worse.

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

I am so sorry that you are experiencing the pain that you are. Did you ever ask your doctor about a SCS(spinal cord stimulator) or a pain pump(morphine pump). The are both completely implanted in the body although a trial is done short term to see if they will work. These are the last type of resort solutions but it sounds like you might be there at this point. Just think if it could help your life immensly. Try doing a search online for "Medtronic SCS" or "Medtronic Pain Pump". They even have information and DVDs they can send to you that explain what the devices are and it has testimonials from people that have these devices and the huge difference it has made in their lives. You owe it to yourself to chekc it out. It just might be your ticket out of this dreadful pain suffering. Good luck my brother and keep fighting the depression, I know how it feels.

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

My Doctor said it could take up to a week to notice a difference (I had mine on the Dec. 11th. I really noticed a substantial difference in the lumbar pain and leg pain within 5 days. So, I would say if you haven't noticed any relief or are even hurting more you should notify your Doctor.

I'm sorry the Nerve Block didn't give you any relief from the pain.

Allan:

Did you have a gap in insurance that led to the pre-existing condition exclusion? If you go from one group health insurance plan to another (even if it's a move to COBRA) with no more than a 62 day gap you would not be subject to pre-ex under HIPPA.

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

I have never had insurance so I am starting from scratch therefore the 12 month wait.
I over did it this morning working on my guitar, so as I had an appointment with the specialist today I asked for the facet joint injections. Boy am I sore now. I can hardly walk. I am really hoping that things settle down by Christmas day. At least I hope I get some benefit in the new year when my brother comes up to go fishing. If so it will all be worth it.
I am flat on my back in bed at present, and with visiters coming, I might make it to the lounge but I am not sure.
Thanks for all your advise. I am seeing my GP next week for my oxicontin script. I don't know where I would be without that, it has worked well for me so far (40mg x 2 a day). I have had to add an endone, 1000mg of paracetamol and valium this arvo so I am hoping that will help settle things down in a couple hours.
The nerve blocks did help quite a bit just the problem on the left L5 where the doctor had three goes with the CT assisted injection and I have been sore at that point and a spot under my butt, must be from the nerve she hit. Thanks again. Merry Christmas.
Allan

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

It does usually take nearly a week for the injections to settle down so I am taking it really easy in the meantime. It is not very nice to live like this and have to just rely on the doctors choice of treatment, I wish I could get some real help from someone without having to wait another year before I can get proper attention. I don't know how people can live with this pain for so long. I suppose we live in the hope that one day the pain will stop and we can go back to our old lives. It is so hard at these times I hope this settles down soon. This is supposed to be a enjoyable time of the year but it has not been very nice for me. I have to go to my nieces for lunch tomorrow so I will just have to top up on pain killers before I go. Allan

Re: Still hurting after nerve block

I was able to go to lunch today and my niece and her little girl. They were so happy to see me. I really need to have someone care about me as I get so depressed on my own. I did have to take a lot of BT meds so I could cope and I had to lay on the couch but it was worth being with my family. I sometimes don't want to leave my bed but when there is a chance of some love I have to reach out. I hope everyone here has been able to spend time with family as it is so uplifting. I am very sore now and may have to stay home tomorrow but I can think of my family and know they care about me to some extent. I am going to be at home probable alone tomorrow but I will spend some time playing guitar and listening to music so I do have an interest that I can follow while I am alone. I will try not to think about the past and think of when I can see a good doctor next year and hope he will repair part of my spine.
I wish you all the best of happiness over the next week and hope you have a low pain time. I thank God I am still here with my family and have some love to share.
By for now. Allan
