I am new to this forum and have a dilemma. I am HIV positive and have been since 1999. I have tremendous pain and have been taking methadone(50mg tid) since I got my diagnosis. I was wondering if anyone could help me find a pain management doc in the Cincinnati area? I am having trouble finding one that is willing to write narcotics for maintenance. It really sucks that there are so many "bad apples" that it seems one can't find a compassionate and caring PM doc anymore. I understand that many people have taken advantage of them. I am NOT one of these people. I have medical records, see an ID doctors who monitors my HIV stuff, have a years worth of rx records, and was taking urine tests randomly at my old docs request. Passed everyone, have the results to prove it. I would appreciate if someone would be kind enough to put me on the right path. I can get a referral from my primary care or ID doc, this is not a problem. I am currently getting my meds from my ID doc. He told me up front that he would not be able to this on a long term basis. I recently moved to this area and would really appreciate any help anyone could give me! Thanks in advance, if anyone can!
Do you have any doctors or nurses you have a good relationship with who may be able to refer you to a reputable Pain Management practice?
Also, here in Phoenix the "Phoenix Magazine" does an annual issue of the top doctors. They can only win if voted in by their peers (though the issue also has some ads doctors pay for). Many of my doctors are listed in the issue. Wasn't sure if there was any similar publication in your area that OBJECTIVELY evaluates medical practitioners.
Hello. sory to hear you have HIV. Methandoen is narcotic pain medication. Perhaps that's why doctors don't want to rx you more narcotic pain meds.
Are you suffering from severe pain eventhough you take methadone?. Where is the pain located?. Please let me know, ok?

First of all, thanks for the input. I appreciate it. I am aware that methadone is a narcotic, schedule II, etc...I know all this! lol. I have been taking it for pain for the last 10 yrs. I didn't start at 150mg daily! I started on Percocet 5-TID. My pain is in the lower abdominal area and I have headaches that are out of this world! I do not suffer from severe pain when I take my meds as prescribed. I get oxycodone 30 IR for BT pain as well. Just switched to them. I got lucky and found a great doc locally. Well, within an hr are so from where I am now living. And of course he is up in age and now I have to worry if he will retire or the DEA will kick in the door. I know there are many people out there who use and abuse these pain killers, I on the other hand just want adequate pain relief until I leave this earth and then it's in God's hands. But, until then a good doc is a great thing to have. I have a solid team of docs working with me, so I think I will be fine. The doctor I saw earlier this week, looked at me and my PILE of records, labs, RX print outs, etc, looked at my dosage and said IF you live to 50, you'll probably be on twice this number before you die! I kind of laughed and said only if you live to be 120 and will write them for me! He is a great man who uses a multidisciplinary approach when treating pain. Some interventional methods, some narcotic maintenance. He has seen that I have had and tried everything and the only thing that keeps me half way sane is methadone. Thanks again for your input.
