Chronic Pain and Diabetes

Hello All. I've been in pain for 9 yrs. +or-. Also have type 2 diabetes. I have been noticing that when my pain level is up so is my glucose. Now the big question, can pain influence blood sugar level? Or is the blood sugar level influencing the pain?
The other night my glucose was 365 two hours after eating. Of course, I felt like garbage and my chronic back pain was up to about an 8. The next day the pain was still up and several hours after a meal that consisted of an apple, sugar was still 180. I am on Metformin that doesn't seem to be doing much.
Anybody with similar problems?

Re: Chronic Pain and Diabetes

Frederick,

Absolutely the pain will raise the BG levels. I've only been dealing with the diabetes for about a year, but I did several weeks of logs and was able to prove it to my doc. The result of that was an additional BT dose per day so I can get some exercise. For me the exercise is the key to keeping th BG numbers down, in combination with diet and metformin. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you get injections of any kind that contain cortisone that can really raise your BG numbers too.

Tigg.

Re: Chronic Pain and Diabetes

Thanks Tigg. Because of my pain, exercise is a "once in a while" thing. I have it pretty much all over. It all stems from my neck/back.
