Re: 18 year old in excrutiating unrelenting pain!!
Hi. It always saddens me to see someone so young having these kinds of pain issues. I'm so sorry.
Are you seeing a spine specialist? Have you had any recent image studies? Since your previous surgery hasn't been helpful I think it would be good to see 2 or 3 more spine specialist....that's either an ortho or a neurosurgeon who has fellowship training and limits their practice to the back and neck only...in order to get a better idea of what treatment might best help you. I personally prefer the Orthopedic spine specialist because I have found them to be more personable and more willing to listen and discuss things. Not that there aren't some great neuro spine specialists, but this is just my experience.
If you have nerves being pinched, there really isn't much in the way of conservative treatment (injections, physical therapy, etc.) that will help. If you are able to do some research on your symptoms, that may help you better understand what is happening and will also allow you to have more understanding of what doctors tell you.
I sincerely wish you the best and hope you will soon get the help you need.
Blessings.
Carol

Re: 18 year old in excrutiating unrelenting pain!!
Tell your dr you pain meds are not working and if he or she refuses to give you something stronger then find a new Dr. For what you have I can not believe the scripts that Dr has you on. That is a joke. No wonder you are in pain. You might have to go to 3 or 4 different pain drs before you find the right one. My grandmother went to two that put her on 7.5 norcos lol before finally finding a caring Dr that gave her what she needed for pain relief.

Re: 18 year old in excrutiating unrelenting pain!!
Agree with the above, i would suggest
1. Seeing anotehr 2 spine specialists for opinions about what can be done to rleive your pain
and
2. Asking your doctor about a long acting pain med (MS Contin, Oxycontin, Opana and others) rather than the short acting meds you are taking now. One pill twice a day of a long acting med should give you almost 24/7 pain control, rather than brief periods of releif followed by hours of pain waiting until you can take your next pill.
As well as a long acting narcotic, 2 other adjuvants might be ehlpful
One is a long acting anttinflamatory analgesic such as Mobic or Celebrex, they can boost the releif a narcotic gives
The second is amitriptyline, taken in a single dose at bedtime, it also can boost the releif you get from other pain killers, and also helps block pain transmission in its own right.
Best of luck.

Ask your doctor to prescribe you Fentanyl patch. Surgeries do not always cure the pain. you are so young.
Re: 18 year old in excrutiating unrelenting pain!!
I am quite sorry you are ging through chronic pain. If it makes you feel better I am only 18 years old and have been suffering for over a year and a half. I am happy to see doctors are atleast starting to help you with the pain, they see you are in pain and are starting to do all they can. I started seeing a pain management specialist 7 months ago and received minimal pain relief for the first month and now I have regressed to the same pain level I was in before.
One thing that we have to deal with is doctors view us too young to have these problems. Yes we are too young, but we're still in pain. I have had to take matters into my own hands for the most part. Medications can touch a bit of it but I find relief from stretching, yoga, a tinz unit, and hours on a heatpad. I also receive cortisone injections every 2 weeks and see a physical therapist weekly.
Hydrocodone didn't touch much for me however it did work for the first few weeks. One thing you may want to hope for is Lyrica. It can take awhile for the full effects to start working, even up to a few weeks. I didn't receive too much relief from it but it varies from person to person. I hope you see the relief soon but be patient, it takes time to get these things right. Unfortunately, being young doesn't help...at all.
If you need someone to talk to, I feel like I'll be able to relate well.

I will pray for you. I can so understand your pain. I had a back fusion L5/S1 and I too cannot seem to get relief from pain. Im in phy. Therapy now, but all they know how to do is hurt you and say it's going to get better. They need to have our problems and I bet their attitude would change. Again, I am sorry for your pain and I will pray, pray and pray somemore for you.
