Question Help on how to Discontine PM with Arrogant Dr!!

Hello everyone,
I'm a first time poster. I was diagnosed 5 months ago with bone spurs in cervical spine and a herniated disc at C5 that's impinging on a nerve. I was in a tremendous amount of pain. Was referred to PM doc and a spine specialist Dr by my GP. The referral to PM was approved first and was supposed to be about getting injections. When I got to his office, I waited 4 1/2 hours to see Dr for 15 mins. He informed me that he doesn't do injections. He only prescribes pain meds. He also told me not to bother to keep appt with Spine Dr. He also told me that I might find someone who would give injections, but that they wouldn't help. I was so disappointed, hurting unbearably, so I took script and left. Of course I had already signed contract by then!! He was so arrogant and never laid a hand on me. I kept appt with Spine Dr who is the one who ordered MRI and other tests on my neck and finally made a diagnosis. On 1st visit with him, I told him about my experience with Pain Dr. He told me to stick with him since I had signed contract and it takes so long to get in somewhere else. Anyway, he arranged for the PM Dr he uses to do a SNRB at the end of Feb this year. It took about 1 1/2 weeks to work, but when it did, the relief was awesome. The pain has started returning. I'm scheduled to have 2 more SNRB's this June. I don't want to take pain meds around the clock. Can I just call PM Dr's office and tell them I know longer need their services. I'm also past tired of feeling like a criminal for no reason every time I go there!!

Yes you can discontinue with a doctor after signing a contract at any time. However, my suggestion is that as there is a good chance you will want/need pain management with narcotics in the future, to ensure there are no issues, make an appointment and tell them in person that you are discontinuing your contract with them.

You don't want to start with a new doctor 6 or 12 months down the road and this old doctor find out and send a note to the new doctor about you breaking the contract (even if you haven't been getting meds from them). Thats definitely on the over cautious side though. I know plenty of folks who would call, or better yet, put something in writing and send it certified mail.

Also, I would find a doctor that can at least give you appropriate taper instructions based on your meds, dose, history, etc. Depending on your dose you may need smaller pills or more than a month's worth of meds to taper off with minimal discomfort. There are a lot of variables in how fast of a taper you can tolerate. I assume you are on long acting meds from your around the clock statement. It may be easier to stick with this doctor for at least one more month to get more pills and a smaller dosage if needed to taper off.

Plus, then you aren't stuck without meds if the nerve blocks stop working. There isn't any reason you can't keep seeing both doctors as long as you only get narcotics from the one you have the contract with, just so you have the meds, even if you don't take them. I get what you mean about arrogant docs though. Sometimes you just have to suck it up for awhile if its going to be a safer option. Best wishes.

Hey, glad your getting pain relief, that's awesome. You can "fire" your PM doc at any time. In addition to the phone call I'd back it up with a written letter advising them that they are being dismissed as of such and such date. I'd then give a copy of that letter to your Spine doc and the Pain doc that's giving you the SNRB's. That way it's in your medical record and everyone is on the same page.

Hope you continue to get relief!

Kat

Re: Help on how to Discontine PM with Arrogant Dr!!

Thanks SO much for the reply! That's a great idea about following it up with a letter to all 3 Dr's!! I'm gonna do that today. I was thinking about sending the letter registered and return receipt requested, so I have proof that they received the letter. I have an appt with spine Dr. tomo to set up my next injection, so I can just give it to him. Now.....to figure out how to word it....lol!!
Good luck with all that you're going through. I noticed that you had Abdominal surgeries. I also have Chron's disease and had a bowel resection last year.....talk about a Big Ouch!!!! I wasn't prepared for how painful that was. But, things have been going great since!
Again thanks for the great advice and best of luck to you!

Angie

Re: Help on how to Discontine PM with Arrogant Dr!!

Thanks so much for your reply and great advice! Luckily, I weaned myself off the meds, another reason that I don't want to go in again. If he drug tests me and the drug isn't in my system, he could say I failed the test and put that in my file!!
I'm going to send him a registered letter, return receipt requested. Someone also suggested I give a copy to my spine dr and dr who is giving me the injections.
Thanks again for your reply. Best of luck to you!!

Angie

Ah ha I didn't catch that you were already off your meds. That kinda changes things. Good luck!

Re: Help on how to Discontine PM with Arrogant Dr!!

Hey Angie,

sorry didn't mean to drop off the world there took a lil unexpected trip into hospital land. Hope you got your letters out okay and things are working out for ya. I feel for ya, Chrohns does suck, and the abdominal ops aren't the kindest, a bit of a motivator to keep the abs in shape. I got stuck with the more "your parts don't work and it's easier to take them out than fix them" kind of thing, so all the removable stuff is gone along with some bowel, stomach, part of a kidney, 1/2 a bladder, esophagus repair and a hiatal hernia. Life is such fun. LOL When my oldest son was 13 and realized or learned what a hysterectomy was he asked me if I was still classified as a "girl", ahh the wisdom of a teenage boy!

Hope those spine injections keep ya goin. And ya hang around, lots of great folks around here and over on the Pain Management board.

Take care,

Kat
