I used to have this clearing of throat all day long and massive coughing. It went on for two years. I thought it would choke me to death. I finally went in to an ENT, and he looked down my throat with a scope and said my esophagus was swollen and irritated, basically esophagitis. He said it is kind of a catch- the more you clear your throat and cough, the more irritated it gets and the viscious cycle repeats itself. He told me to resist the urge to cough, instead take a sip of water or suck on a hard piece of candy or cough drop. Also, acid reflux can creep up into your esophagus without you knowing, and that can irritate the hell out of your esophagus too, making you cough a lot. So I also needed to watch what I eat, I took Prevacid for about two weeks too to get the acid away, but it doesn't both me much now. One other thing that causes me to clear my throat and cough alot is when my sinuses drain down the back of my throat. I don't even notice any drainage, as my nose never feels plugged up, but my ENT also said that my nose was swollen and I didn't even realize it. So I also have to watch my sinus problem too.
