On 9/20/04 I developed a cold/virus. A couple days later developed a rash that started on stomach, sides and back. Went to internist on 9/29/04 and got cortizone shot. Dr. says it was a rash from the cold/virus like kids get when they're sick. Said the shot should do the trick. Now, today 10-4-04 the rash is even worse. Now traveling downward to upper thighs. Cold symptoms gone except cough you get after a cold. It looks like measles....red bumps but not blisters. They itch a little but not bad. I also posted on "skin" thread. Any ideas? Thanks, Tammy
Did you happen to have anything that looked like a ringworm lately? I had something similar twice called Pityriasis Rosea. Look up some pics and see if it looks at all familiar.
Noone knows exactly what causes it, but I got mine after having cold symptoms too. One of the theories is that a viral infection will trigger the outbreak. It's not dangerous and not treatable and will resolve on its own.
Have you run fever at all? If so, it sounds like it could also be Roseola, or "three day measles." My son had this a few months ago and ran a high fever for 3 days, and the day his fever went down, he broke out in the same places you are. But I think that ones kind of rare in adults.
Other than those, there are just lots of wierd viruses and allergens out there that cause rashes. I broke out in hives everyday for 3 or 4 days my freshman year of college, mostly on my butt, thighs, stomach, and around my wrists. From the location, we thought it could be laundry related, but we were still using the same detergent and stuff we'd used for years. Who knows.
I hope you don't itch too bad. My 15 month old is just recovering from a bout of chickenpox (that he had already been vaccinated against at 12 months) so I've done all kinds of research on rashes lately!

Well, the pityriasis rosea can start out with what looks like a ringworm, called a "herald spot" before the rash appears, but it doesn't always. Even though it looks like an early ringworm, it's absolutely not caused by any type of fungus. I've had this twice and it's a very harmless thing.
Other than that, I'm stumped....

It seems that the rash is moving downward. It is now on my upper legs and has disappeared from my face and neck. You could never see it on my face but I could feel it. Maybe it has to get down to my toes before it goes away!!LOL!! Oh well, I feel ok. It's just annoying. I do still have a very low fever. 99.4 or so.
Just curious.... does your rash go away after 30 minutes to an hour? Does your rash usually appear after you wake up?
Reason I am asking.. I am having the same thing. I just got over bronchitis and was sick for two weeks. Now when I wake up I have hives on my thighs and feet and some on my scrotom. Within 15-30 minutes they dissapear. Its very weird. As the week has progressed I have noticed it is starting to get better and today when I woke up... I had barely any. The hives are really itchy and look strange. They are red circles and all over. Hope this helps and you feel better
Supposebly hives arent too bad, unless they never go away.. then you are always itchy.
Well I don't know if this is related - I have been sick since May 04 and it started as the worst cold I have ever had...then worst swollen glands...then a week later awful gastrointestinal distress...many tests were done...the rash that I have been getting in the last 3 months of all of this comes and goes with in hours...it starts out as little red polka dots...looks like chigger bites...it itches slightly - then it disappears with in a day or so. I am a lot more likely to get skin flushes...if I take a hot shower I am red for an hour later. If I sit with my foot under my leg my foot will be crimson red from the pressure. It has been really weird. I at this point have been tested as having active chronic epstein barr virus (we all have antibodies but when your immune system is down after a virus, surgery, stress, or some other illness ebv becomes active) so that might be what my issue is.
I wanted to post though. It is very strange. I have never been one to have sensitive skin. I really believe it is tied into this original virus.
My son just developed red spots on his legs, they've spread to his arms. Took him to the doctor 'cuz the day care was afraid he had chicken pox even though he was vaccinated. He's had hives before and zyrtec took care of those -- so it wasn't that. He doesn't have a fever, swollen glands... Doc said it was a virus of unknown origin. Called his specialist in the city and the nurse said they've getting lots of adenovirus rashes. Just gotta let it run it's course.
He just looks icky -- red spots all over his arms and legs. Don't appear to itch. None of them appear to blister...
My rash is more prominent later in the day for some reason. I noticed today it looks better, though so maybe it's going away. Sorry about your bronchitis. I do believe my rash is from the virus and your's may be from the bronchitis because I think we get rashes sometimes when our immune system is down. Thanks for the reply and hope you feel better soon.
Your son's rash sounds alot like mine. It doesn't itch much, only when you think about it too much. I never called the dr. back cuz I really don't think he can do anything else since the cortizone shot didn't phase it. I'm sure it just has to run it's course. Hope your son improves.
When DS developed a rash last spring and chicken pox was going around his class, a doctor wrote us a prescription for an antiviral. I asked about it this time and was told -- nope, can't do anything for it.
Rash just diseappeared yesterday. He's got a spot on his knee which got a little inflamed 'cuz he still crawls a bit, but other than that they're pretty much gone. When he's in the tub you can kind of see them, but they're not raised up. Must've been some sort of allergic reaction
