Safe to Swallow Phlegm?

Please anyone who has any credible source for an answer on this topic -- I've had flu/cold severe cold now for about 3 weeks, most of the symptoms have cleared up with the exception of this horrific cough which thoroughly disgusts my husband.

He claims when I cough up this yellow/green disgusting mucusey phlegm that it's safe to swallow it. He says the acid in my stomach will kill it. Logically, I'd think it'd be less likely to promote my illness if I coughed it up and spit it out.

Is it safe to swallow the phlegm or smarter to spit it out?

Re: Safe to Swallow Phlegm?

Wow, I wouldn't on a constant basis. Horking in public, not a nice thing to do, but in private, I'd spit it into a kleenex and toss it.

If you spit it out, it's better than keeping it in the system. Your body will be producing more than you'll be wanting to swallow I would think.

If it's still yellow-green, it's still a lot of to spit out as much as possible. Have you tried the product Musinex? Maybe that will help loosen the secretions and get it out better.

Hope you improve soon!
It's all a matter of perspective!
