Antibiotics for Chest Cold???

Hi...I started a few days ago with a scratchy throat and cough, and felt congestion in my chest....Then I had the stuffy and runny nose and sore throat....The congestion then went deeper into my chest and it hurt to cough or take a deep breath.....I went to the doctor today and he gave me Robitussin DM and also Amoxicillin antibiotic....He didn't say I had strep nor did he test for it....My throat actually feels better....I have been reading online how antibiotics will not help a chest cold, regular cold, or flu...Only to take antibiotics if its bacterial.....I don't like to take them needlessly...Do you think they will help, or will it clear up just as fast on its own??

Thanks!

Nancy

Re: Antibiotics for Chest Cold???

If it is just a cold still, then you don't need the antibiotics. But, if you have developed bronchitis, then they will help you a lot. There are three reasons the doc might have given them to you:

1)You have bronchitis or pneumonia

2)He thinks you are at risk for getting bronchitis or pneumonia

3)They are a placebo. (He prescribed them to make you happy, although he doesn't think you really need them.)

I have no way of knowing which it is, although fever several days into your cold, shortness of breath, and coughing up particularly disgusting colored junk would be signs of #1

If you still think you just have a bad cold, call him back and ask why he prescribed the antibiotic--but if you start taking it, do finish the bottle!
