how long should a fever last in a child?

My 6 year old child is going on his 10th day of a fever. His fever has varied from 102 to 104.1. Only going doing down to about 101.8 with tylenol but coming right up after about two hours. He did seem to get the flu that's going around, but I'm very concerned about the duration of his fever, he began on Thursday night a week ago, it is now Saturday a week later.

A fever should not last longer than 3 days in a child. Take him in to see someone ASAP.

10 days is way too long. It sounds like there may be something else going on like an infection. I'd take him to the doctor asap.

Re: how long should a fever last in a child?

My child is on day six for her fever and she had all blood work done and everything came back normal. Did you ever get an answer as to why your child had a fever for ten days? I am very concerned. She seems to act as normal as could be, you would never know she is sick. But this is too long for a fever.

Re: how long should a fever last in a child?

My daughter today again woke up with 102.5 fever. This is day six. All blood work came back normal. No one has ever heard of a fever lasting this long. Is there anyone that had the same problem and can give me some insight. Tomorrow I plan on taking her back to the doctor to get her checked again. She developed a cough but other than that she is fine. Any insight would be appreciated.
