Question Thick, sticky, bloody mucus.. Please HELP!

**WARNING! Description gets graphic** 3 days ago I noticed I had thick, sticky mucus stuck in the back of my throat. I can't get it to come up and no matter how many times I clear my throat or hack it up it wonít budge. Often times I end up gagging just trying to clear my throat. The mucus feels like it is stuck behind my uvula (the thing hanging in the back of your throat). It usually sits in there for an entire day and the next afternoon I am finally able to get it out. I was horrified by what I saw. It was VERY thick (like glue), about the size of a quarter, white, sticky and it had a small amount of dark blood in it. I know blood is a bad sign, but it wasn't bright red and I wasn't coughing it up. I thought the blood was from a broken blood vessel in my throat from trying to cough it out the previous day. I didn't notice any drainage or anything sliding down my throat the rest of the day. That night I went to sleep and awoke the next morning with the same feeling again. It took me over 24 hours and finally today I was able to cough it up again. This time I spit the mucus into a tissue so I could look at it closer. I grabbed another tissue and placed it on top of the mucus and then pulled the tissues away from each other. The mucus stuck to both tissues like glue and looked the same from a couple days ago. There was a little bit of dark blood in it and white, about the size of a quarter. I feel fine, my throat is a little sore from all the clearing, coughing and hacking. I don't have a stuffy nose nor do I feel congestion in my chest. When I take a deep breath there is no wheezing or cracking. I am a smoker, which I know could be causing this, but I have been smoking for about 10 years now and have never had mucus look like this. I do have allergies, but have not had a flare in a long time, but when it does happen it is usually accompanied with a stuffy nose and feeling sick.) I canít remember the last time I have been sick, it has been years. This stuff just appeared one day and seems to stick around (no pun intended) for 24 hours before I am able to get it out. Please help! has anyone ever experienced this? What could this be and why did it just appear out of the blue? A few people in my family have acid reflux and I am about to google that to see what the symptoms are. All this coughing is giving me a headache. Thanks in advance!

This would be a great time to quit smoking. If you quit smoking, it will boost your immune system and very likely solve your mucus problem.

Stopping smoking would be a good thing.

Have you tried Mucinex tablets, this helps thin mucous?
Have you tried an anahastimine like Zyrtec?

You no doubt have a sinus problem, most likely caused by your smoking and/or whatever is in the air these days.

Re: Thick, sticky, bloody mucus.. Please HELP!

Yeah, well I'd be interested to know if there's a real answer. I have the same problem. It's been ongoing and escalating for going on 10 years. I DON'T smoke, I've NEVER smoked, and I don't even hang around with smokers because the smell makes me gag. The constant mucus hanging in the back of my throat makes my gag reflex work overtime. I'm sure the small amount blood in it is simply from my sinuses having to work overtime while I try to clear them. Using a sinus rise bottle in the morning helps make it "let go" temporarily. But within a few hours it's back again.

I tried allergy testing, but my allergist determined I wasn't really allergic to anything. I have not found a drug in the world that makes more than a tiny dent in the problem. I did find one or that made it unbearably worse.

I've have a theory after visiting various doctors that while I probably am putting out a lot of post-nasal drainage, the thick and sticky part is coming from the fact that I may not have enough output from my salivary glands. Do they go up past the back of your tongue? Basically, I have a dry mouth - I think - and it's making the stuff stack up in there. Eating improves things markedly - don't your salivary glands go to work when you eat? So...any thoughts on this theory?

Re: Thick, sticky, bloody mucus.. Please HELP!

I get this but I have bad allergies. JSB... do you drink a lot of dairy or eat a lot of cheese? When I was young I had the worst problems with mucus in the back of my throat. I knew I had allergies, but when I got to college and realized I was lactose intolerant, I stopped drinking milk. Not drinking milk has reduced my mucus problem 10 fold!! It's not the intollerance that's the problem, milk has properties that tend to cause mucus-production. Something you may want to think about.

I did try that for a while to see if anything changed. No dice. I'm not a big milk drinker anyway, although I do eat a lot of cheese. But even when I stopped eating all dairy for a couple of months, I couldn't detect a noticeable difference in the problem.
