12 yr. old-constant cough

I have a 12 year old that has an incessant cough. In the past, he has a nebulizer & has had albuterol & prednisone. Neither offered any relief. Then it was determined that he doesn't have asthma. There's never any wheezing. Therefore the doctor prescribed Nasonex nasal drops. He was also prescribed Singulair daily & then told it was unnecessary. We try propping him up, laying down, using Vicks vaporub, and also a humidifier. He has suffered from this "croup-y" cough for years. It's sometimes to the point where he vomits. It's very deep, "barky", & constant. It's sometimes accompanied by fevers but not always. He has taken prescribed "tussins" and Benzonate (sp?) and NOTHING relieves his cough. He gets it every few weeks from October to March & has for years. He has also had an MRI which revealed no issues. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: 12 yr. old-constant cough

I don't know if your child has seen an ent but if he hasen't he should. My son had the exact same thing, for five years he was on flovent, ventolin, prednisone, singulair, should i continue? Meds after meds after meds. We did see an ent which did nothing for us, we saw asthma specialists, respirologists, allergists, etc, etc. Diagnosed with asthma in the cough variant form, never had wheezing, also had croup on several occasions.
Finally respirologist suggests that we go back to the ent, i said no way. I said i will go see an ent but never the same one, i have been asking hime to scope my child and he refuses, our appointment only consists of him telling my son to block his nose when he swims. I refused to see that particular doctor and he had no choice but to refer me to another one. So, i must say mother knows best in this case, he referred me to this amazing ent that took the time to scope my child, to send him for croup series tests and discovered that my child's upper airways were narrowed due to gerd. He prescribed losec for three months straight. This was the miracle cure for my child he has not since taken any pumps any steroids any meds at all except of course his flonase for his nose because he does have environmental allergies. This doctor changed my child's and my life the fact that my son was barking for five years and he missed out on so much was quite frustrating i would try everything but the poor thing could not get any relief. If you haven't seen an ent please do so and request these tests. It's been about three years that my child is perfectly cough free. Also try to get seen by a respirologist because it doesn't mean that your son will have the same problem mine did. A cough can be caused by many things, allergies, common cold, there is tics like in tourettes syndrome, there is habit cough, cva, which is asthma without the wheezing. Keep searching for answers don't give up you will find them. good luck to you and your child.
