I don't know how many years ago that was. I understand that he really was a great surgeon at one time. But some believe that he has been coasting on his reputation for some time. He has had some pretty nasty personal problems which have been well documented. I can tell you of my own experience - a strange consult I had with him. When I asked to see pictures of work he had done, he took a dog eared polaroid out of his pocket. I asked to see it and he wouldn't let me touch it. Then after he looked at the area of my body we consulted about (for less than 5 minutes), he told me which procedure I should get. I then asked him a few questions about the procedure itself, and he angrily got up and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. It was as if he thought I had a nerve even asking ANY questions. He was "God" and who was I to ask him anything! I waited for a bit, because I just couldn't believe it. Finally, I put my clothes back on and went to the receptionist. At least she told me that I wouldn't be charged for the consult (normally $175). Truly bizarre.
I have also heard that he has been using residents to perform surgeries, rather than doing the work himself. I feel that if you are paying a premium for a particular surgeon's skill, then you should only be worked on by that doctor.
Anyway, I wouldn't use him these days.
