Rhinoplasty Question... please help - Cosmetic / Plastic Surgery Message Board

Hey everyone... I have a few questions and I was wondering if you guys could help me.

I'm a 18-year-old female, and I was originally going to have a nose job last December in Richmond, Virginia. I'm a small person, and my nose is not terrible but it throws off the balance and harmony of my face. I have my father's Jewish- ethnic nose. It was going to cost around $8,000 (which is a lot of money for a Richmond surgeon... but there are hardly any plastic surgeons here...) At that last minute, my parents (who were paying for the nose job) backed out and cancelled my surgery, and we planned to get my rhinoplasty this May. Last week I went to the surgeon with my parents for another consultation, and after we left my father said I could not get it done... because he is worried about the health risks and the anethesia. I, however, am willing to take this risk because my nose has always bothered me.

I have the money to pay for the surgery myself, and legally I know I can get this surgery without permission since I am almost 19. However, since I am still under my parent's health-insurance, and my dad will not sign, will that cause suregons not to want to operate on me?

Also, since the cost was high in Richmond ($8,000) I was planning to look somewhere else since I can probably get a much better suregon in a bigger city for about the same price. Any suggestions for surgeons in New York City or another big city on the East Coast? I was thinking about Thomas Loeb, Thomas Romo III, or Nicholas Tabbal.

My dad was the same with me when I wanted to have my nose done when I was your age. I did it then when i was 28 years old and worked and could afford it myself. He see now the mistake he did back then because back then I could have had the nose job done completetly paid by the insurance where now its not way you can fool an insurance company for cosmetic procedures and they are so expensive. I paid $4k for mine, it was going to be 8k but the insurance covered that half as that being a septo-rhino (septoplasty is always covered by insurance)

Now here is something I do agree with your dad is that in regard of anesthesia. YOu do not need to have general anesthesia for your nose surgery. I only had local anesthesia and this is the safest way to do it. They give you sedative medication along with it so you wont remember a thing. General anesthesia is risky that is no secret so if you can avoid that better. I dont understand why many surgeons like that surgery to be under general anesthesia. And recovery is a lot more faster under local, once the surgery is done you are wake up and go home happily. Ask your surgeon if he can use local (this will help to convince your dad) and try to talk your dad and convince him in a sweet way. I know exactly how you feel cause exactly the same happened to me.

From the doctors you listed, I've visited with Dr. Tabbal, and met one of his patients. Very natural job. The girl had an alar base reduction, and some tip work. No scarring. He puts you on a regimen prior to surgery consisting of vitamin K and some other stuff.
