Talking Tummy Tuck: Avoiding So Much Pain??

I was thinking lately: is most of the post op pain of TT from tightening the muscles? I wonder if they could simply cut off the FAT then sew you up and leave the blank muscles alone? It's My stomach. Can't I tell them to just cut off the skin and fat? I'll pay the same price regardless of how much Faster it would be.

Re: Tummy Tuck: Avoiding So Much Pain??

For me the biggest pain was from the drain, especially where it's located. I couldn't wait to get that stupid thing out. I actually don't recall a lot of pain from the muscles. I was so numb down there for so long. I still don't have a lot of sensation in certain areas and it's been over 2 years since I had mine.

Having the muscles tightened was an added bonus for me after three pregnancies though. And I still don't have what some would consider a small waist (about 30", depending on the bloat quota today).

What does it drain? Blood, pus or motor oil? And it drains into a....what?
A cup, your pocket?
My waist was 25" at 19. Sounds great to me now.

Re: Tummy Tuck: Avoiding So Much Pain??

Your body produces a fluid (don't recall the actual name) due to the trauma experienced from the surgery. If the fluid is allowed to accumulate in your system, it could be fatal. So, they put a drain in that allows it to leave your body. It eventually stops producing itself and once it gets down to a certain level, the doctor can take the drain out.

In my situation, I knew about the drain from reading so much literature on it. I just failed to ask where. I had assumed it would be at the incision site, since that just made sense to me. No! I woke up and found out the drain was on top of my pubic bone (mons pubis) or whatever it is called. There's a tube going from a hole there to a little plastic thing that looks like a clear grenade with cc measurements on it. You have to keep track of how much you're draining out and tell the doctor. And of course, you keep pouring this thing out so it doesn't overflow itself.

Most people I've been told can get the drain out rather quickly. But, in my case, it took forever because my body kept producing enough of that fluid to keep it in. And, with the tube hanging down around my knees, it seems like everytime I moved my legs or knees I would pull the freakin thing and it would of course jerk that hole where the tube was coming from. That was miserable!! Plus, I have developed some type of nerve damage from that now, which is very painful. I've been told that some nerve must've gotten trapped from when that happened or something.

I would ask your doctor where they put the drain so you can be mentally prepared for that part of it. I have no idea if they put all of them in that same area or not.

Re: Tummy Tuck: Avoiding So Much Pain??

I had a full tummy tuck a week ago today. Mine was just skin removal, no muscle repair. It was not bad. I think the worst was after standing or walking my back gets sore from being a hunchback. However, today, I replaced my hospital binder with a compression garment that the doctor ordered for me. Afterwards, my husband and I went and had lunch. Walked the mall plus two other stores then drove around for 1 1/2 hours looking at houses. The tightness of the garment really helps my back. I am ready to get back out and do something! I have only been taking xtra strength Tylenol for the last 3 days, so the pain hasn't been too bad - just some soreness and tightness. I agree with the previous poster - the drainage tubes suck... I had three (one was removed today). It makes it difficult to find something to wear and difficult to sleep comfortably. I have only slept in the bed one night - went back to the chair after that. I am so pleased with the results and would recommend!
