Question for those with Silicone implants - Cosmetic / Plastic Surgery Message Board

Hi...I had silicone implants done in 1990 and have never had any problems with them.

I was just diagnosed with an auto-immune thyroid disease and hypothyroidism....and have been doing tons and tons of reading on the internet....there still seems to be no way of knowing who would have gotten a disease and who wouldn't.

Anyways.....have any of you developed any disease...diabetes etc......or did your dr talk to you about this?

My surgeon moved away, but I spoke to my Ob/gyn about it...he said to just leave them in, I would run more risk of them rupturing during removal.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Hi, I have one silicone implant due to breast recostruction after a mastectomy and I don't have any problems with it. My surgery was only 6 months ago so I can't speak to long-term effects, but my plastic surgeon felt that silicone was a perfectly safe choice.

I had breast implants and I began suffering symptoms of illness, later diagnosed as Hashimotos autoimmune thyroid disease. I know my implants caused my illness because it happened pretty quickly. Since I had my implants removed, my health has returned over time. I don't think implants are safe, and the controversy around implants and illness exists for a good reason. I am proof of that by the fact that I got better over time after they were removed.

Redeemed...are you on thyroid medication? If so, I would also bet that is why you feel better

I had my implants done many years ago with no problems and I feel my thyroid disease is inherited, it runs in my family. I feel much better since starting meds.

Love my three guys,

I am on my second set of implants and they are silicone. I have had them six years and just had a rupture. I will be getting them removed soon with a replacement in mind but am not sure if I will use silicone again.

I had never had an ear infection in my life until I got my implants. About 3 months after I got my implants I started having constant infections. I never connected it to the implants until a plastic surgeon asked me about ear infections! I was shocked.

I also went in for a physical and my doctor noticed a lump in my neck. They had ran some tests and they also discuss Hoshimoto's disease with me!!! But I didn't have it but the lumps come and go and several different doctors over the years have asked me about the lump without my mentioning anything about it. I also had to have an ultrasound, as they thought my liver was enlarged. It was not.

Also diagnosed with TMJ less than a year after getting implants.

But I honestly have no idea whether or not these are linked to the implants.
