Question Breast Reduction

I am 9 weeks post op for a breast reduction. I woke up Sunday morning to a shirt full of blood coming from my right breast. There were 2 small holes in the incision under the breast that were draining. They seem to have gotten bigger since Sunday but my doctor does not seem concerned about it at all. He says that it is normal for this. However I was not told of this before the surgery nor I have been able to find anything about it anywhere on the internet. Please help if you have any info for this problem. I am just hoping that it will heal. I can't understand how this could happen so far out post op. There seems to be no sign of infection at all. I did not have any trouble at all after the procedure. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Breast Reduction

Hi,
I had a breast reduction in 1999. My only advice is to call and/or go see your doctor if you have ANY WEIRD thing going on after surgery! Be really really careful with EVERYTHING you do for the first few months and don't mess around with this very delicate surgery and after surgery period. I have had many surguries in my life and this one was the most delicate one yet, I wish I would of treated it as such at the time. Even years later, if you notice anything strange/weird or different call you doctor that very minute.

Good luck and please take care, Arrowmyth

Re: Breast Reduction

Hi there,
I don't read here often, but just had a breast lift/reduction about 8 weeks ago and saw your post.

This is actually more typical this far post op than you would think. Did you have a T incision under your breast? I did and found a small hole under each breast (bigger under the left breast). My doc said it was the tension of the tissue at that suture line and probably an internal suture working its way out. He stressed not to worry about it unless I get a fever and notice a smelly discharge.
I have talked to a lot of different women who have had the same thing happen about this far from surgery, just when you think things are almost healed.
A few suggestions:
Use neosporin on it - keep your hands clean/use a Qtip and apply it to the hole and then place a sterile gauze pad on it under your bra during the day. If you wear a support garment then do the same whenever you wear that.
Change the pad 2x a day and wash the incision w/ a skin cleaner such as Hebiclens(spelling?). Rinse well and apply your pad
Don't use your arms to lift anything heavy or lift them over your head for another month or so!! I have a three yr old and this one is hard to do sometimes, but it can cause a lot of stress on your incision site. Don't put dishes away in the cabinet, or get them down, bend over to wash your hair in the shower instead of lifting your arms over your head, don't push or pull objects that you 'know' are too much weight.

One thing I have used the past week and it seems to be helping my incision heal is tea tree oil. I don't know if docs recommend it but it does keep the area clean and it seems to be healing. Check w/ your doc first though.

Hope your healing continues quickly
T

Re: Breast Reduction

Excellent advice! I also had a three year old when I had my reduction done... I purchased one of those railings that you would normally put on a child's bed to help them not roll out of bed.... but I used mine to keep me safe from my kid... so she could not just jump up on the bed and onto me ... Poor thing, but she knew something was different and treated me as such... it was so very sweet.
I am part Hawaiian and I scar very badly. If I would of know how bad I may not have had this surgery... but I did find that Meraderm works really really well. Just in case you are like me, I hope you are not, but that medicine sure did help the scars even years after the surgery itself.
Take care, Sundance
