Breast Reductions! Help! - Cosmetic / Plastic Surgery Message Board

I am desperately trying to seek help in finding the best way for me to get a breast reduction. I am 17 turning 18 (D.O.B 13-03-1991) and my breast size is currently 10-12 F (Australian sizes). Due to the weight of my breasts, I have severe back, neck and shoulder pain. I have always had large breasts for my size and age. I’m also a dancer which makes things extremely difficult. I have been getting physiotherapy weekly, but due to my independent status (living without a mother) it gets quite hard financially. I’ve currently started putting money aside every week to pay for my surgery, but I’ve had a lot of people tell me not to bother with a private doctor, but instead go to a public hospital and go on a waiting list. This would help financially as I don’t have to pay. My only concern about that is, the doctor which I may get, may not have much experience and as normal person, I don’t want someone with no experience hacking at my chest. At the same time, I have no problem with paying around $3000 - $4000 for someone with experience and the comfort of a private hospital. Not only does the weight cause physical problems, but the lack of clothing, bra’s and bathers available and the unwanted attention from males causes some emotion stress for someone my age. I’m currently getting my own Medicare card if that’s any help but I would to hear from anyone one who has had the surgery from public and private doctors and would also love to hear what a breast surgeon would recommend.

Okay, it does sound like breast reduction surgery is a reasonable option for you.

I'm not from Australia, so I can't speak to the public vs private. However, either way, you should have the opportunity to meet with the surgeon and assess his experience and credentials beforehand. It's probably at least worth getting on the waiting list.

Be aware that if you become a mother later on after the surgery, you may find you have a poor milk supply, so the baby might require supplementation with formula.

I'm from the states... but I had a breast reduction surgery 2 summers ago. My breasts were 36 DD and I'm 5'2". I had severe back pain, neck pain, headaches (doctors said were due to my breasts), and was extremely uncomfortable. I was also a dancer and had to wear 3 or more sports bras to help cover them up. I decided to go on with the surgery in summer and I am so much happier... my breasts are now 36 b. I know your pain with dancing and how hard it can be!!

What I would do is see your primary doctor, the doctor you see for check-ups and ask them for a list of recommended plastic surgeons. That's what I did-- I was referred by my pediatrician. You definitely want a good surgeon who's well-trusted and who is well-known for their good work. In the end, my surgery came up to be $7,000 but my parents insurance covered everything so if your insurance will cover it, you won't have to pay anything. I would strongly suggest researching surgeons and get other opinions from your doctor as well. Definitely go for it, you won't regret it.
