Is there really nothing to do for costochondritis?

Hi. I must say costochondritis is a really annoying disease I guess. Long story short after going to the e.r. a couple of times and seeing my doctor, and a cardiologist and back to the e.r. they finally diagnosed me about a month ago at the emergency room when i thought i was having an attack early in the mornng and they eventually diagnosed me with costochondritis. This has been going on for over 6-8 months now btw and I am 23.

Now I am wondering if there is anything to do about it. I've wondered if it could be an ulcer or something else which causes the costochondritis but the emergency room didn't seem to suggest that and said it is nflammation in my ribs, also the cardiologist said it is absolutely not heart related even tho it can feels like it and my doctor said it was just muscle skeletal before I got diagnosed at the e.r.

I've noticed motrin and aleve help but I'm not comfortable taking them more than once or twice a day. I don't like taking pills too often personally. I wonder what else I can do though. Seems like there are no costochondritis specialists out there or anything of the sort.

My symptoms range from stabbing pains in left side of my chest a little below the nipple usually and it is generally uncomfortable, I don't even know how to describe it really. Also sometimes it radiates in my left arm and can make it uncomfortable too. It is the worst when I am trying to sleep. Sometimes I find it very hard to relax my body at night when my mind isn't busy with something.

I guess it sucks because it seems to be a benign disease but it has a way of feeling much worse than it really is and no one seems to know much about it.

Can anyone recommend anything? Is it good for costochondritis to wrap something around your chest perhaps to keep your ribs in place? Has anything besides warm compress/shower and motrin or aleve helped you with costochondritis ?

Thanks for reading. Any help is appreciated.

I should say taking it easy and resting a lot does seem to help. I feel like it may be getting better for me by taking it easy. Peace.

I just found out about this disease and a woman had it for 3 months and finally was diagnosed and she went to a doctor and got a cortisone shot and it took all the pain away. It could flare up again since it is an inflammation in your rib area. Best wishes. Pain is not fun especially when you are 23.

I have this, it started after a serious car accident 11 years ago, I had 2 ribs that would go out of place and have inflammation in the neck and back and ribs, my treatment that helps is physical therapy and hot and cold compress, nsaid's and mild light stretching and walking, hang in there! A heating pad and a walk are what get me quick relief I go through a heating pad once a month!

The only thing that seems to help is rest, no lifting or exercising but I hate being sedentary. I've got an elastic wrap with bones that is about 12" wide (a little too wide) that I wear when I'm doing light work that seems to hold the ribs & cartilage in place & helps some. I also thought I was having a heart attack the first time I had this. Sometimes I actually holler when I move the pain is so intense. Good luck!
