I am 23 and was just diagnosed with this on Thursday by a Pulmonary Specialist. Since July I have been having severe chest pains and when I went to the doctor they diagnosed me with Pleurisy. But from what I could tell it never went away and I even got bronchitis last month while hurting in my chest to begin with. Since July I have had sever difficulty breathing, sleeping, walking, or any other activity and was finally sent to the specialist. When he slightly touched my chest area it hurt so much I could not keep from crying. This is when he told me my lungs were fine and as all the tests had previously shown my heart is also good, thus the arthritis of the chest diagnosis. He put me on an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer and pain pill. I am hoping to have a little relief from this pain. Does anyone know if I will always hurt at least a little or if it will just flare up? The doctor did tell me it would never go away but we would try to manage the pain.
This pain is terrible and after reading the previous posts I see that I am not alone and I could never wish this pain upon anyone else. I hope anyone with this pain can find their own sort of pain release, I know it's not easy.
From what I have noticed it seems like everyone's costochondritis is different. I know that mine flares up occasionally. When it does I try to take an anti-inflammatory immediately. When my doctor first diagnosed me she suggested using ice to try to reduce the inflammation; and I still use that when I get flare ups today.

Bless you all.[/
So sorry to hear about your pain. For me the pain does go away but everytime I get stressed, a chest cold, lift or move anything heavy or sleep in a funny position it can flare right back up. ibuprofen works best for me. If you're able to try sleeping propped up slightly on your back, it makes waking up alot less painful. Anxiety can also be a trigger, if so you can try taking xanax. Hope your pain goes away....
