| | Crohn's and Vitamin Deficiency
I have had Crohn's for at least 6 years (diagnosed in 2002, but had symptoms before that). I am a 30-year-old female. So far I have been doing pretty ok (no hospitalizations or surgeries). I have had my share of doses of prednisone and Entocort (currently on again), along with being on Imuran for a long time now. A few years back, my primary care had a bone scan done on me, and it turned out ok. I have already been diagnosed with Vit. B12 deficiency, and am using Nascobal (inhaled B12) to keep that in check.
At this year's physical she had all sorts of blood tests done to see how my nutritional status was considering the Crohn's and steroid use to treat it. She got the results back and my Vit. D is very low. She is starting me on 1000 IU of Vit. D per day (on top of the multivitamin and calcium/vit. D supplements I already take). She has also presented the idea of me taking one of the bone-building drugs (Boniva, Actonel, etc.), but doesn't reeally want to do that since I am still of child-bearing age.
Has anyone else had this same problem? How did your doctors handle it?
