| Anemia - Recurring loss of iron
Hi
i am a 31 yr old male and have been diagnosed with a few health issues namely
Autoimmune Chronic Active Hepatitis (Liver) - 1998
crohns disease - 2000 (Bowel)
Pancreatic Deficiency - 2003
Anemia - 2010
i have malabsorption hence the reason for the anemia but my GI and Haemotologist are puzzled as to why i lose iron within 4 - 10 weeks of having an iron infusion, and my haemoglobin is also going down. with the iron being provided via IV the gut absorption is taken out of the questions because my serrum ferritin sky rockets.
in the past year my ferritin has been as low as 12 (normal range 20 - 300), after an iron infusion it gets into the thousand and within a month or two its back down.
my hb has been down to 48, normal range is 130 - 180.
ive had a colonoscopy and gastroscopy which shows severe inflammation of the large bowel but no bleeding. the docs say to be losing iron so quickly there would need to be a fair amount of blood in the stools, but ive only noticed perhaps the size of a a large coin maybe 1 - 4 times a month at most if any.
After reading some posts im thinking there may be some occult bleeding so i have asked my GI specialist to do a pill cam to see any other parts of the GI tract which may have not been picked up in previous tests.
Any ideas or past experiences similar to mine would be very helpful to hear about.
Thanks in Advance
