Question is this Crohn's related?

My 35 year old partner has been suffering from joint pain mainly in his knees, ankles and shoulders which is intermittent and very debilitating. It can last for a couple of weeks at a time, then clears and he can be free of the pain for months then it returns.
We have recently discovered that is biological father has Crohn's disease. Could these joint problems have anything to do with Crohn's? He has no stomach/intestinal problems that we are aware of. A friend told me that Crohn's can also produce awlful joint pain, is this true? And should he raise this with his doctor?

Re: is this Crohn's related?

Hi...Yes, IBD related joint issues can be very painful. I don't think that one would have joint pain related to CD unless one has CD...but since it's an autoimmune disease, it's possible that your partner has inherited that tendency and has autoimmune arthritis.

My suggestion would be for him to get referred to a rheumatologist who can do the blood tests to see if in fact it is. I would assume an x-ray would be done as well to see if there is any swelling, whether it's osteoarthritis or other issue.

Did this come on suddenly or has he always had these issues?
My one question would be if he has a fever when he has the joint pains?

Sometimes the issue isn't necessarily the joint but is the muscles or ligaments in those areas.

I hope he gets some answers....

Re: is this Crohn's related?

He has been having problems since his late teens and he has just reminded me that he had an op afew years ago to have the lining of his knee remove as he damaged his knee and his immune system would n't allow it to heel (it keep flooding the joint with fluid).

He is going to mention his father's crohn's next time he speaks to his doctor. Thank you for your reply, it has given us alot to think about.

Re: is this Crohn's related?

You're welcome. I still think that a rheumatologist is in his best interests at this point considering his age, for how long it's been going on, that it's affecting many joint areas (and on both sides, not just one), and the length of time it took for the healing process of his surgery.
