Does my daughter have CF? - Cystic Fibrosis Message Board

My daughter turned two last month. Since she was born she has had colds that turn into wheezing, (her chest sucks in and out) and she struggles for breath. I have taken her to the Dr. but have been told it was either allergies or asthma. She hasn't had a sweat test. Should I insist on one? I haven't seen any other symptoms. She's a little small for her age, but not dramatically so. Can anyone give me advice on what I should do? It's mainly my intuition that tells me something is wrong, but I don't want to rely entirely on that. Help?

Dear Mom,
From my experience you can indeed have a child who wheezes and struggles to breathe and it NOT be CF. My son now 21 years had severe respiratoy infections and wheezing along with pneumonia and does not have CF.

We do however think that both of my grandchildren [see Rosebuds Gram] may have CF.

The tests are painless and if you would feel better do talk with your Dr. about it. You are your child's strongest voice.

I would have the test done.My daughter wasn't tested until last spring because they were sure she couldn't have CF.The were sure of this because she only had respiratory problems and no GI ones.......

Guess what?My daughter has CF..Now I realize this isn't true for every child that wheezes,coughs,etc.But if it would make you feel better do it...
