cf patient and outdoor activities - Cystic Fibrosis Message Board

My daughter is 15 years old and was diagnosed with cf just last year. She has had a mild case so far. Her youth group is planning to go exploring in a cave. I'm not sure if this would be good for her. Please advise.

I guess I'd check with your clinic. I'd have concerns with either it being a wet cave and the potential for molds, bat and other droppings... Or if it's a dry cave -- the amount of dust she could inhale. IMO, I wouldn't risk it.

With CFers and their extra thick sticky mucus, there's more of a potential for her to be affected by stuff that normal people would be affected by.

She is absolutely right, if it is a dry cave, she will inhale all that dust or extras, but the dust and extras will also remain in her lungs, and nasal passageway because the mucus there is soooo sticky, she will be coughing that stuff up for days, maybe even weeks, with her coughing so much, irritation will occur, and with irritation comes blood. I personally wouldnt risk it.
