| Need suggestions for giving 2 year old Pancreatic Enzymes
Hi there,
My two year old son's diagnosis has not yet been confirmed, but after being seen by a paediatric GI he's been put on pancreatic enzymes and we've been told he's pancreatic insufficient.
The enzymes he has been given are Cotazyme ECS 8 in capsule form.
I've been told to empty the contents of the capsules into apple sauce or strained fruit and that was it. We've tried it and he refuses to swallow it - I don't think he likes the texture. As a side note, he had significant swallowing difficulties as an infant / toddler and still does. He has poor control of his tounge and can't seem to sweep the pieces of enzyme from under his tounge or in his gums.
The applesauce seems too runny - I think we'd be better off with something thicker where he can't feel the balls, or something quicker/more direct that just gets them in and washed down.
His daycare has to also administer these enzymes so I need to make it as easy as possible for them so I know he gets the medication - if it's too difficult and he refuses I'm not sure they'll put in the effort to make sure he gets it.
Right now we have to fight him to open his mouth, then put the contents of the spoon in - tell him over and over not to chew (but he still does), then have him wash it down with a cup of water. I then have to look under his tounge and in his gums - then brush his teeth after the meal because we have ground up enzymes in his molars.
Need help!!! Open to any and every suggestion!!!
Thanks in advance,
Kay
