My 12 month old son has a lot of the digestive symptoms of CF, but he doesn't have any lung problems at all! He has been constipated for months. His stool is bulky, yellow, and really stinky!!! The smell actually goes through his diaper into your skin if you hold him with a poopy butt!!! His stomach is really distended! He is also low in his weight. A lot of my friends have been telling me have the dr. check him for cystic fibrosis!! They have me really worried now!! Do you have to have lung problems to have cystic fibrosis? Does anybody have children that was diagnosed with CF without lung symptoms? Any help would be appreciated!!!
If his symptoms started only after he began eating cereal, it could be celiac disease. The only treatment celiac usually requires is the complete removal of gluten from the diet.
Either way, you need to take him to the ped and insist on a good evaluation. Lots of babies have digestive upset, but if his growth is slowing, that means something is wrong.
maybe you guys could give me a little advise. My son is the opposite, he has a ton of lung problems including 6 hospitalizations since 4 weeks old, he is now 6 months old. He has some constipation, but mostly junky lungs, wheezing, nasal congestion, breaths very loud, stopped breathing a few times, anemic, enlarged kidney, and acid reflux. He has seen a pulmonologist and has been put on prednisone several times. He is currently on albuterol nebulizer, albuterol inhaler, flovent inhaler, iron, and prilosec. The wheezing is 24/7 and never stops, the dr just keeps saying asthma. He had a sweat test that came back normal? could this be CF or no?
To Newmommy: what does his pediatrician say? Has your baby been sweat tested? There is a version of CF in which babies are born with a blockage in their intestines (meconium ileus) & so the doctor knows immediately that it's CF. But it also may be a gluten issue so you need to discuss this with his doctor and ask for a sweat test.
To AidensMom: If his sweat test came back "normal" then he doesn't have CF. Discuss your concerns re: CF with his pulmonologist.
