Is it out of place for me to attend? - Death & Dying Message Board

I have just recently learned that the parent of a childhood friend has passed away. I was sociable with this friend in my last years of high school but we had new friends and went our seperate ways. However, we were extremely close during grammar school from 1st through 8th or 9th grade. I lost complete contact with this friend right out of high school which was about 8 years ago. Is it proper for me to attend this funeral? I feel horrible for her but I don't know if it's my place since I haven't really been a part of her life since early childhood. Any advice?

I can tell you that having you show up will say more to your friend about how important her friendship was to you than anything you can imagine.
Also, I work in a funeral home and sometimes I wonder if more people would have stopped by to pay their respects and say "I'm so sorry..." if they knew that there wouldn't be as many people show up as you would think..

P, I say go, and honor the passing of someone who meant something to you and your old friend. It doesn't matter if you've lost touch, maybe you'll get reacquainted. At the least, you'll let your old friend know you care at a time she needs support!
