I think it's imortant for him to go with you in support of you and your friend, regardless if he knew the man or not. Friends of mine who didn't know, or barely knew, my father came to his memorial service to support me and my family. Memorial services and the like are really for the people left behind, not so much the one who has left. It allows people to remember the deceased to others and celebrate his life. So I don't think it's out of line for you to request that your husband accompany you.
