certain signs of near death for a person

my dad is 89 and has had alhezimers for 10 years. His blood
pressure two weeks ago was 110/42. recently in last two days
his blood pressure has dropped to 92/42. is this an indication
he is near death. Should i monitor blood pressure and can i tell
if he is near death by drop in bp. two weeks ago his respirations
were 12 a minute. He is in a nursinghome and has been there
for four years

Re: certain signs of near death for a person

You have my sympathy. I lost my mother to that horrid disease three years ago. If your Dad is in a good nursing home, they should be able to tell you if your father is near death. Is he at all responsive to you? My mother had good bp until the day she finally died-which was 6 days after they couldn't rouse her from sleep. What have the staff said? The nurses that work around this disease are usually pretty dead on about how their patients are doing.

Re: certain signs of near death for a person

Hi,
I am very sorry about your father. I am not a nurse but I do volunteer at the hospice and I am familiar with this issue. My experience is that if the end is really near, breathing is shorter, there may be a rattling noise (often called the "death rattle") at the back of the throat, caused by the accumulation of saliva because the person can no longer swallow. Also feet and hands can change bluish.

The imminent signs are:

Eyes have glassy fixed stare with large pupils
Pasty grey, or blue greyish colour present especially on lips, hands and feet
Hands and feet can be cold
Jaw open, breathing through mouth very rapid or very slow (often with rattle) with pauses of 20-50 seconds between breaths
Unresponsive to voice or pain

Take care ((()))
