Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

I have it as well. I have problems in my lunbar spine as well the cervical spine. 11 years ago I had two vertebrae fused in my neck. Currently I need to have surgery again to the neck as I am losing use of my right arm. I completely lost use of my left arm before the first operation.

I have found nothing so far to relieve the pain. Even lying in bed doesn't always work. I use a wheeled walker toget around if I am going any distance. I live in Arizona and we just passed a medical marijuana law that by having chronic pain I am eligible.

Wish I had better news, good luck, hope you find something soon.

Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

This topic is relatively new on the board and I just happened to stumble past and see your post. You may want to visit #1: pain management, and #2: back problem boards and move your post to either/both of these areas as they have been around for years and literally have hundreds of threads that seem to be a better fit for your problems.

Good luck,
KG

I was just diagnosed with it yesterday after i had a ct scan..also have a bulging disc and my si joint pops out weekly...i have arthritis down my spine too..all my doctor said i can do at this point is core exercises to strengthen the muscles, anti inflammatory for the pain, rest. I houseclean for a living which doesnt help! And I cannot think of any other job that would be good for me as I cannot stand or sit for long periods without pain and discomfort. It can be really depressing. I'm too young to live my life like this. I cant even walk for long periods or it feels like someone is stabbing me in my lower back and buttock!! ugh.

Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

I seem to have almost exactly the same problem,Worked for 30+ years in metal finishing ,lots and lots of lifting, pushing, pulling.Had to retire because of the severe pain in my back and down into my left leg. laying down with a heating pad works for awhile for me. Finally had to go to pain management doctor. get a shot into the affected area every 3 months. After a lot of meds that didnt work for me was put on methadone. It gave me back the enjoyment that you should have in your life.Have been on the same doseage for over 5 years, still works fine,Dont give up,every day is still a fight even with meds, have this arthritis in my sholders, and my legs, swimming,I should have said getting into the pool at the y,helps manage the pain. good luck. There are many of us with this problem,

Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

Try infrared massager. Available on ebay or amazon. They have found that using infrared makes the body increase production of nitric oxide. NO is a great healer because it lets the blood vessels expand. If anyone here has used viagra then you know how that works. Google it , hope it works for all of you as well as it does for me.

Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

I know this diagnosis can be disheartening. I felt they really didn't understand the constant pain & discomfort when I was given exercises to manage the condition. They are of some value though if you get the right type of instruction & do stretches religiously. Wish you luck

Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

I feel your pain. I have had multiple MRIs that show moderate foraminal narrowing, osteophyte formations, broad based buldging disc, etc. Ended up in ED 2 weeks ago with 10/10 pain in neck, scapular area and right arm. Was treated with Percocet, Ibuprophen and valium. No help, since have seen ED again and 2 primary care MDS and a rheumatologist. Finally today my PCP tells me it is from stress because the MRI is stable. I'm at my wits end!!!!!! Don't know why no one can help me.

Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

So frustrating!! I always think that with all the scientific advances, WHY oh WHY can't they figure out a way to treat those of us who battle back pain every day?! I for one have had good results with Vicodin, but of course the drs. don't want to keep prescribing that for extended use. Hang in there- I'll think good thoughts your way :0)

Seek help, and when you do so - do not go ask a doctor what is wrong. Tell them. A pain management specialist or orthopaedic spine specialist is your best choice. I found Chiropractors to be incredibly helpful, too.

I recently underwent a 4 level disk fusion in my cervical spine to correct a tremendous amount of pain I was having. I didn't choose it, it was chosen for me. I ended up in the emergency room with pain I could not tolerate. The hospital pulled some MRIs I had done two days prior (which was order by a orthopaedic specialist I decided to try) and told me I wasn't leaving without emergency surgery. I had 2 herniated disks which were compressing my spinal cord in such a way it wasn't really safe for me to leave without risking serious, permanent damage.

It was the best thing that happened to me in a long time! I got instant relief. The doc thought he was going in for a 2 level fusion, but once he got in there he saw what an MRI couldn't see - and it was a mess. 4 level fusions are rare and my case was a little on the extreme side - as the symptoms I was having happened more suddenly as opposed to gradual.

They say I'm a little young to need such intensive surgery - but what was I to do? The pain was intolerable. Now, its gone! Almost all of it. No pain meds, no problems with sitting or standing for more than 20 minutes at a time in any one position...all resolved!

Now, I must also deal with my T-level disks - but currently the discomfort I feel is an annoyance, not a true pain so it can wait. But, knowing I have this problem allows me to manage my life in a way that I do not participate in activities that may make it worse. You know, low impact exercise and other activities.

Good luck, I hope you find someone to listen to you. If you have to, go out of your local area. They are out there. You'll see!

Re: Degenerative Disk Disease

Thanks so much for your suggestions-you sound like someone who's familiar with pain! You said you're too young for all this-how old are you?
