Avascular necrosis hip

Hey everyone,
ANy youngsters out there with severe arthritis or avascular necrosis of hips. I have had pain for years and kind of neglected it! Just thought it was my sciatica and ofcourse had many injuries and falls. Am overweight and trying to lose but doc says I need surgery and doesnt want to do it on me until I lose more weight which I have som GI issues (see GERD and acid reflux threads) and am losing weight that way so that is antoher story. My pain is in the right and boy is it hard to do anythng. I am feeling like an old man!!!! and I mean 70s or 80s old. Anyone around my age (39) with this AVN mess? Hope not though but if so, God Bless ya'!

Re: Avascular necrosis hip

I'm in the mess with you. I was diagnosed with AVN in both hips when I was 32. I had a core decompression done in both hips to buy me some time. It worked. As a result, it bought me 5 years on the worst one and I had my first hip done at 37. That hip was showing sign of collapse when the core was done. On the other hip, it bought me 11 years total. I just had that one done and I'm now 43. I should note that I am extremely active. I got to the gym, cycle, lift weights, and walk etc.

Your doc wants you to lose weight b/c every pound you lose takes 7 lbs of pressure off of your hip. This is difficult if diet doesn't work and your hip hurts which prevents you from exercising. You should get some different treatment opinions before you decide on a course of action. The first doctor who diagnosed it on me want to replace both of my hips at the same time 6 weeks after the diagnosis. So it's important to get 2nd and 3rd opinions before you choose a direction. I can't stress that enough.

Re: Avascular necrosis hip

My husband was 39 when he had his first hip replacement. He was in denial for a few years prior, but when it got to the point he was ready for a wheelchair, he had the hip done and 4 months later had the other hip done. He said he wished he hadn't waited so long. His hips weren't designed for running, but he was so thrilled to be back on the golf course. He had to work at losing weight through diet but the drs stressed to him it was very important. He did it and lost 20 pounds. His hips lasted for 17 years before he had to go through another replacement. He had them done again but was complaining within a year. After 4 years and getting nowhere, he switched surgeons who immediately noted that the cup had not been switched out and the material broke down in his body causing an autoimmune reaction that was creating holes in his bones. He had an extensive surgery and change out of the hip and a graft. He will have the other side done within the year. Again, he will stress, he wished he hadn't waited so long to replace them when he was 38. The dr brought his hip bone out to show me and it was complete void of any cartlidge. Doc said it was the worst he had ever seen and was shocked he could even walk.
Good luck to you

Re: Avascular necrosis hip

Wow, thank you!!! I had AVN of the third metatarsal, and my joint died. I can't begin to tell you how much I have gone down hill with this whole mess!!! The foot that I had AVN in is now jointless, swollen all of the time, and I am still having bone loss in other toes. I can barely walk on it!!! I also have gerd and esosophogits. I cannot take anti-inflamatories, because of my stomach. My first surgery was also "core decompression"......Ever since than, my foot has gotten so much worse. Almost 6 years I have been dealing with this....Hope you feel better soon....

Re: Avascular necrosis hip

Hello Everyone!
I have recently been diagnosed with AVH and I'm 18 years old. I started having severe pain when I was 15 and when I went to a bone specialist he just kind of brushed me off and told me to get some exercise, even though I'm not over-weight and I am active enough. I just got diagnosed yesterday and they're talking about a hip replacement... I'm very scared and nervous, so I was wondering if anyone had any comforting stories or just any advice at all.. It's put me into a deep depression...
