I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

I have very bad degenerative disc disease on my L2 through L5 and T 12. No surguen wants to touch my back and all they do is throw medications at me and Im getting sick of it. I had a disc graph done on my back and that was the most pain I have ever went through. There was only one disc that held fluid and that was my my L1 and it felt like pressure filling up my discs. All my other discs made me want to cry because they would leak the fluid injected and it hurt so bad. I have been to every Dr. in our area that are suppose to be specialist in their field. I went to the Minneapollis spine clinic and the Dr. made everything to be about money, insuranse not paying so I have to live with the pain. They had me on vicodin 10 norco's a day and I ended up getting addicted to those so I had to go through the physical and mental pain of with drawals. After I got off those I couldnt handle the pain so they started me on Fetynal. Over the years I ended up to be on 200MCG of Fetynal and I hate it. I hate taking medication in order for me to work. The patches barely touch the pain and that is mainly the strongest drug out there and I have no where to go. I practically begged for surgery but the insurance company said that the surgery may or may not cure my pain so they are very reluctant on allowing to pay for surgery. I hate my patches because they dont stick all the time and it seems like i dont even feel them working anymore. Does anyone here have any suggestions because Im at the end of my rope and I need help. I want to be pain free and medication free. I wish I could wake up, go for a run like I used to. Work out after work and enjoy my family at night. But instead I wake up and put the patches on, wrap them up with athletic tape so they dont fall off and struggle through the day from my pain. Some one please give me some reassurance that this is not my future. If its my future I wont make it past 40, Im 35 right now. I hate medications I would love not to need any of them. Please help

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

I forgot to ask is there any other medications that would help better than the Fetynal patches? Its seems like they are even working, right away I could tell because I didnt have any pain and I was relaxed and in a good mood but now I feel nothing but pain and starting down the road of depression because Im not getting any help from anyone or getting any relief from my medications. Please reply, Im begging for any kind of help or direction. I need hellp more than you will ever know. please

I am sorry your insurance is reluctent to pay for surgery. It sounds like you really dont have anything to lose to have it done. I too know what it is to live in pain! SUCKS!! I had a fusion in November and am struggling to deal with pain and life. I would go to another surgeon. I checked out 3. Have you ever had steriod injections or taken oral steriods?? those helped me some.

I have had the shots in my back and they also burned my nerve ending ( they grow back) that didn't help any. I find if you warm the patch first they stick better I put mine on a hot cup of tea for a min then stick them. They have just started me on lyrica so I will see if that work. Hope you feel relief soon

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

Fentanyl is not the answer. It did not work for me and the generic version does not stick, especially in the summer time when you sweat. If you try it tell your dr. to do brand necessary on those as they stick better and you can use a breathable band aid product like Tegaderm. You can order Tegederm online by size just make sure it is about 1 inch larger around than the Fentanyl patch. The generic makers, and I called the pharmacovigilance dept. at one (they are the pharmasists at the company that are responsible for the post marketing data) told me no that I could not use anything because they did not test with this. I did it anyway when my doctor and I forgot "brand necessary" on the scripts. I took it for several months and still pain. I have had 3 surgeries on my lumbar spine and then the last one he finally fused one level. Lyrica for back pain is still unproved it is a shot in the dark. I take Lyrica for fibromyalgia it doesn't really work for the back pain. Steroid injections might work and RFA (radio frequency ablation) again is like the steroid shots, might work and might not. I had that in my neck and it did not work at all.
I will tell you what did work for my neck was Botox. They inject in the muscles of the neck and are a God send. They stop the headaches from the muscle spasms associated with OA of the cervical spine.
I take oxycontin and hydrocodone but these only work if I take the maximum of the hydrocodone (Norco 10/325) but the Tylenol in these can cause liver damage you must be careful of the Tylenol dose. I wish they would take out the Tylenol but that is what the oxycontin is really. I cannot increase the oxycontin dose because it makes me horribly sick to my stomach I throw up until the capsule comes out. And here is a biggy if you are taking all these meds you should not be working you should not be getting into a car. You have an accident, even a little one you are in a lot of trouble. Re-think your priorities, whats important to you.
I have successfully quite all the meds but the pain is so bad I eventually go back on the meds. I don't know the answer I sure wish I did. PT hasn't helped, new diagnosis' of hands, knees, ankles along with the spine are a bummer. I am glad I have my grand kids close to keep me busy. I always have time for them.

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

So sorry my friend. We do sound similar in our condition. I have cervical, thoracic and lumbar problems. Bulging, herniated, degenerating, protruding etc. In the past 3 decades I have had a 1000 chiroprator visits, 2 surgeries, epidurals, trigger point injections and one heck of a lot of drugs.

The patch is probably the only drug that I have never used and I totally relate to not wanting to take all of this crap.

One drug has come out on top for the pain control and the ability to function normally.

I am on 3 10mg tabs of methadone 3 times a day (90mg/day). I do not have any feelings that I have taken anything (no high) except I can tolorate the pain all day.

I personally recommend to not take anything else with it. No BT drugs.

Best of luck and God bless.

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

I tried methadone but could not get past the mortality rates with methadone. They have some mysterious death circumstances. Now take into consideration that most on methadone are drug addicts that have replaced methadone for opiods and we probably have cause of death. Methadone, however, is much more addictive than opiods meaning you will suffer worse withdrawal symptoms. I did use it several times to go off my narcotics, replace doses by thirds. I researched the methadone, really, and just decided that it's really all the same except for the "euphoria" that narcotics give you. So in the end what is the diff? I think the methadone is a little more dangerous, so I gave it up.
Yes and we do have similar oa. I have been reading about the type of oa; primary, generalized, so it's genetic, it's all over and bilateral. So along with my spine is my thumbs, hands, ankles and now the knees. Some day they will come up with a treatment for this. My sister, a few years younger, she has the spine and hips right now. Good luck to you.

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

don't heat the patch it can cause it to release more medication & kill you Fentanyl is dangerous you can get an overlay that will hold it on ask the pharmacist, if the patch works properly you should not feel any euphoria if you are it's too strong, it takes up to 12 hours after you put it on for you blood plasma level to reach the correct level, change them at a set time that way your blood level stays the same never leave one on & put on another till it kicks in you could easily overdose don't heat. Heat= OVERDOSE. The patch is the strongest narcotic out there you have to be very careful with it.

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

I am a 44yo female with severe back pain. I had a slip and fall 10 years ago ruptured two discs in my lower back, I had the IDET which helped me tremendously, I was able to walk again without a walker and continue on with my life until 4 years ago when my discs started to turn black and crumble, I had a surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Weston tell me that the surgery would not help me with my pain, so I continued for another year on pain meds but unfortunantly I was working in the healthcare field very closely with patients and felt that I needed to take care of my pain in another manner so I could continue my work with patients in a much safer manner, so I went to what someone who had been touted as the best neurosurgeon in south Florida and he agreed that he would perform surgery on me and that I would or should have a great outcome from said surgery. I had the surgery three years ago and have to say it was the worst decision of my life, immediately after the surgery I started having severe left leg neuropathy and my foot was cold at all times, I had more MRI's and injections and within six months the surgeon told me there was nothing more he could do for me and wanted me to have the neurostimulator surgically implanted into my spine and sent me to pain management for said procedure. I refused the surgery as this was one of the things I had experience with in my field of work I knew there was a high rate of infection and improper placement of the leads which meant another surgery to remove this device from my spinal canal. I did however after two years have the medtronic morphine drug delivery system installed in my lower abdomen which at first was a god send or so I thought, the first time it was turned on it almost killed me I had to go the ER for a morphine overdose, then I had an adverse reaction to the morphine and legs and feet started swelling, so now they turned to the Dilaudid, within months of the dilaudid I started to have abnormal EKG's and I never put two and two together until just recently, due to other reactions I had been having to the dilaudid I wanted and needed to have the pump removed, yet another pre-op screening and more problems with my heart, my cardiologist said it could be all the dilaudid so I panicked and had my pump turned off the next day and went through a week of of withdrawls, but now I feel so much better than I had in over a year, I am even interested in sex again, I had not realized how it numbed my neither regions and feel like a young girl feeling things for the first time. I am still undecided about getting a neurostimulater at this time but hope that my cautionary tale helps you in your decision making process. I would rather have stayed on the oral drugs for life I spent three years trying to get disability as I am unable to stand sit or even walk for more than a few minutes at a time, and now I get 650.00 a month for my disability wow...

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

I have been reading the posts and it seems there is no real answer. A part of me has been in denial that my back could produce all this pain and often think maybe it's something else.
I am afraid I will eventually be in a wheelchair or have to stay in bed due to pain. I have no answers as I myself am trying to find the best medication and struggle to deal with all the changes in my life due to pain and not being able to work.

I'm awfully sorry for your pain. It must be just awful for fentanyl 200mcg not to manage it. I might suggest a pain management specialist.

Re: I need Help, Fetynal and back pain

I have not used the patches so I have no comparison.
It is important to know what is the cause of the pain. Is it nerve or muscle. I have both. My lumbar is muscle because the muscles try to keep the hip and spine aligned and hurt so very bad. I am on 9 10mg methadone a day and they work fairly well. Methadone does not get you high so you can function.

My left buttock is in constant pain from nerve involvement and for that I would need oxy, fentnal etc. BUT:
I am going throught the Veterans Hospital for treatment and they want me to go to Phys. therapy (bull ****), but I have to play their game. I would expect to be on morphine be for too long.

My long winded point it that Methadone isn't too bad for certain kinds of pain.

Good luck and I will include you in my prayers.

Hi,
I'm originally from the Great White North, 45 miles east of Fargo, you know.
I had a burst fracture of L1 decades ago. In my 50's the degeneration of this came back to haunt me. I further injured my back by hyperflexing my back, breaking several osteophytes that had fused together, and pushing the pieces into the vertebral discs.
I became very familiar with Fentanyl. It never stopped the pain, it just made me nuts. Pain made me angry. When a flash of pain hit me I would fall over rather than to try to maintain my balance. It was miserable.
A friend of mine had very successful spinal surgery, plates on the inside and outside of his back plus a lumbar laminectomy. He's 75 and gets around better than I do, and without pain.
I am disabled because of my back and several other problems I have. I have a sedentary life style. I get by being careful what I try to do, and by taking my medications.
At 35 you have a lot more miles to go than I do, and I feel for you. I hope you find a way around the medications. There just aren't any easy answers for spinal problems.
