Degerative Disk Diease
I am 31 yeas old and was told I have moderate ddd in all three parts of my back. I also have Facet Joint disease. Is it normal for a 31 year old to have that much this early. I twisted my back at work in November and have been off ever since than. They finally did an MRI three of them actually and said they all came back postive. They dont understand what is causing all the pain though. I go for a spinal injection on Friday but they also want me to see a neurosurgeon. I dont understand any of this
Re: Degerative Disk Diease
I'm 33 and ever since a year ago in may my life took a drastic turn for the worse. One day I woke up and couldn't walk. I have small children to take care of. I was diagnosed after tons of different doctors, neurologist included, with ddd, and ridiculitis....I have had 6 shots in m back. And they want to carterize 4 nerves around the disc....without insurance I'm looking at 1000 a nerve....not inccluding the thousands already spent in this past few months. I wondered if u have had any relief. I'm very discouraged. I dobnt have a life anymore. Or even my career I worked so hard for. Do u know if this gets any better?
Re: Degerative Disk Diease
My understanding is that degenerative disc disease is a normal part of the aging process, and facet joints get a lot of wear and tear. In my case, I started having problems at a relatively young age, and I hit a tipping point in my mid 30s. I was treated by my family doctor for a while before moving to a spine specialist. I also went through injections, PT, etc. I guess to answer your question, I think it can be normal to have a spine that "ages" faster than others. Seeing a spine specialist as you are makes sense as a starting point on your road to recovery.
The one thing that is a little troubling to me is your comment that you are having injections but the doctors are not sure what is causing the pain. I would ask about that personally. If the cause of the pain is not identified, it doesn't make sense to me begin injections. It may be that you or your doctors know more than you've posted, but I would want to know why I was having the injections and how I might expect them to help before I had them. I would be especially curious if I were having injection in my thoracic or cervical spine.
Based on what you've said, I am guessing that you may be having facet joint injections, but I would ask because there are various types of injections, they are done under different conditions, and they carry pro's and con's. I would try to be as informed as you can be before you start a course of injections.
I hope this helps a little.
