New Braces ADULT - Sore throat

Hi Everyone, I am 43 and just got braces 3 days ago. I have never had braces before. My question is can braces cause a sore throat? I know that sounds wierd but it started the day after I got them. No fever and more post nasal drip than normal. I don't have a nickel allergy because I have been tested. The braces are ceramic. It's strange but it's like I have a dry mouth and excess saliva at the same time. I have to swallow differently and can barely chew right now because of how my teeth meet with these things on. I have read other places that some people say they get a sore throat for a few days after they get their braces tightened. I just wanted to see if anyone else has experience this. Thank you.

Re: New Braces ADULT - Sore throat

I can't answer your question one way or another, as I've had Invisalign, but not metal braces. From what I remember, the Invisalign didn't cause a sore throat in my case, though I did have canker sores on my inner lip/cheek across from the attachments, and where the plastic met my cheek. Have you shined a flashlight on your throat? Do you think maybe you have canker sores back there? I've had canker sores on the back of my throat before (though not caused by a dental visit or by Invisalign), and when I have canker sores on my throat, I feel like I have a sore throat. I tend to get them when I eat/drink anything acidic, when I sing or talk excessively, shout, or just when I'm stressed out, so perhaps it could be that. Or maybe you caught something a few days before you got your braces.

Re: New Braces ADULT - Sore throat

My feeling is that the excess saliva will adjust itself once your mouth gets used to having these new "intruders" in. I think that the sore throat is coincidental. I have never heard of braces causing a sore throat.
When the braces were put on I imagine your mouth was open for quite awhile?
That in itself could have dried out your throat. I think that a week from now you'll find that you're all better. That's my hope, anyway!
