Do I need a Root Canal?

I know, silly question, and at this point, I am most likely looking at a visit to the dentist. The problem started yesterday at lunch, a dull pain in my back tooth. I've had these before, adn they fade away quickly, but this one stayed. I noticed that the pain was actually coming from my gum away in the back when i would press on the gum.

However, the aching was relieved actually by crunching some small ice. Eating or biting with the teeth does not cause pain, or even when I press on the tooth.

I looked in the mirror, and noticed a small white area located on the gum next to the tooth. Could my gum be infected? I'm trying to get an idea of what Im facing here.

Re: Do I need a Root Canal?

This is not a silly question...there aren't any silly questions!

The white spot on your gum sounds like a "boil" or pus bag.
Yes, I think that you need a root canal. If your nerve was alive or active, you wouldn't want ice on your tooth. Try putting the ice on one of your front teeth just to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
When cold makes your tooth feel better, it's a sign that the nerve is dying or has died.

Call the dentist so that he can put you on an antibiotic and then start the root canal.

Good luck!
