Well, I went and there's a battle plan. YIKES (oral surgery!)

on my last thread, i told of my terror at the thought of the dentist and his evil tools. lol. well i went on Wednesday and the news has both good and bad. on the good side, only 6 have to come out on the top!! YIPPY! BUT on the bad side is that they have to be surgically removed. (BOOO hiss) SO i find this wonderful friendly dentist and he cant do any of the work and has to refer me to an oral surgeon friend of his. apparently, i have to be knocked out for this surgery which, to me, is just fine. i go ni ni with my mouth one way and wake up with something totally different. He at first tried to tell me that there would be nothing in the space where the old teeth would be removed for 3 months. i had an instant panic attack at the thought of being virtually toothless for 3 months but then he said i could do a temporary partial.
in the end, everything is still up in the air while he gets my referral together and figures out who the best match is for me and my insurance. I have to call back on Monday and get the phone numbers to make the appointment. I am happy that i dont need a full upper denture but scared to death again about having to do all this surgically. i guess its good i'll be asleep through it but waking up is going to stink.
input? anyone have a partial? anyone ever had surgical removal??
Thank you everyone!! You've all been so helpful!

Re: Well, I went and there's a battle plan. YIKES (oral surgery!)

I had all of my top teeth pulled by the oral surgeon about 4 weeks ago. It was really no big deal. I was pretty nervous going in, but I was quickly "out" and waking up was no big deal either. You will just feel tired for pretty much the rest of the day. You should get some nice drugs, and feel nice and relaxed!

REALLY?? You just made my day! i have been stressing out about this since Wednesday. i thought going to sleep would be a great thing but then i thought the waking up would be truly miserable. i am glad to hear its not a big deal. how do they put you out? i havent spoken to the oral surgeon yet so i know none of the details.

Re: Well, I went and there's a battle plan. YIKES (oral surgery!)

They put an IV in my arm and told me they were going to give me a little something to make me relax a little (I was obviously VERY stressed). They were talking to me and that's all I remember about that. Waking up was just like waking up when you're not quite ready. They had me get up and walk to a recovery room type place. I was in there for a little bit and kind of nodded off. The nurse was giving my husband all of the instructions for care for the remainder of the day...I had an appointment at my regular dentist as well, and stayed awake enough for that. Actually, after I left the surgeons, I didn't sleep until I got home and that was a few hours later.
I was really anxious about the whole going to sleep thing just like you. Knowing what I know now, I would NOT get myself worked up about it if I had to do it again.
Hope this helps!
