Stinky tonsils

Does anyone have a problem with stinky tonsils? Sometimes I get this awful taste in my mouth so I put my finger down the side of my mouth, push on my tonsils and then smell my finger and it stinks. It smells like those white things that sometimes get lodged in the tonsils but most times there are no white things there. I find that odd that I have that stinky smell without the white things. Anyone else have this problem? If so, what do you do for it? Thanks!

Re: Stinky tonsils

How in the world can you touch your tonsils without throwing up???
I have HUGE tonsils, and just gargle daily with mouthwash. Does the trick for me.

Re: Stinky tonsils

The same thing happens to me. THe whiteh chunks in the crypts of your tonsils are probably tonsilolliths. It's food that gets lodged in those pockets, and it stinks as the bacteria grows on it.

I too get the bad taste in the back of my mouth, even when my tonsil crypts are empty. It's probably the beginning of a tonsilollith - the bacteria building up. Try gargling more often or using a water pick to clean the pockets after you eat.

HTH!

Re: Stinky tonsils

I don't know if anyone still reads this thread or not but for anyone that does I have a method for cleaning your tonsils that worked wonders for me. If you have really sensative gagg reflexes then this may not work for you but for those people that use q tips this is so much easier. I take a interdental brush these are little brushes that are suppose to be used to clean in between your teeth and they cost like $2 at any drugstore. I use the brand G.U.M and I put peroxide on it and then use it the same way you would use a toothbrush. I brush all of my tonsil and it even gets inside the big hole on the top of the tonsil. It doesn;t really hurt or anything and within a week any smell or tonsil stones that may be stuck in there are gone. It doesn't take long either. Try it out .

Re: Stinky tonsils

just imagine all the bacteria the tonsils are responsible for trapping... Gosh I hope you have a very clean finger when you go back there touching the poor tonsil. Don't want an infection so be careful when you go poking and prodding back there. I merely used a water pik ONCE and the next day they were inflamed. I can only guess that meant I either stirred up some of the bacteria living inside them or just irriated the heck out of them. So yeah be careful with what you may use to clean them. Sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone. Or go to an ENT.

Re: Stinky tonsils

Usually I'd try to pick it out with my finger, feeling like I'm about to vomit half the time. What seems to work great is take a syringe with mouthwash or water and just spray the tonsils in the gaps. It doesn't make you feel like you're going to puke and it washes the gunk out nicely.

Re: Stinky tonsils

I too get those white puss balls in the back of my tonsils. I always get them out though, otherwise they make your breathe STINK! Not sure if it's from food or just tonsils producing the puss? seem to always collect! What i do ( and it's probably not the best thing to do) is take a q-tip and gently push on my tonsil then the white ball usually comes out. Sometimes they are huge though and there is a lot in there (hence why i don't think it's food) I only get them on the right side of my tonsils though! i was always worried it was a sign of something bad but i been to ENT, regular doctor and brought it up with them and they said it's nothing to worry about! My tonsils are BIG though and when i was younger a doctor ( mean old man!) said my tonsils were diseased and i needed to get them out or else i would be sick all the time and have a weak immune system. Never got them out and here i am now years later! haven't been sick in years and never had any problems with them besides the white puss! All the other doctors since then said i didn't need them out! Then again i don't think they really take them out as much as they did in the past? unless they're REALLY bad?

Re: Stinky tonsils

I'd think though it's better to get them out as opposed to leaving them and swallowing them on accident...yuck! that bacteria probably isn't too good for your stomach either!

Re: Stinky tonsils

Yeah but a q-tip might not get the parts that's really stuck and can leave that cotton residue. The water basically washes it out, even the tough ones in the nooks, and no residue. Try it! I did it the first time tonight... it doesn't make you gag to touch them with the syringe tip.

Re: Stinky tonsils

I had my tonsil removed at age 24 and it was by far the BEST thing I ever did. I had huge tonsils and had strep a lot as a kid. I also had my adnoids removed. In the last 16 years since the surgery I have never ONCE had strep and the only time I get a sore throat is at the onset of a cold.

For the past 4 weeks I've had this bad taste when I swallow which was really annoying when I ate sense everything had a rotten aftertaste to it. Just yesterday I started feeling something in the back of my throat and I successfully yacked it up. It was a small milky white particle that absolutely reeked. I figured that was the source and end of my bad taste experience, however I'm still getting that awful taste when I swallow. Knowing what to check for now, I looked at the pockets of my tonsils and could not see any other foreign objects lodged in them. I've never had this problem before and its really annoying not being able to know how exactly to fix it. I figure there are still particles lodged very deep in my tonsils that I can't see. Short of performing a home tonsillectomy, anyone have any ideas as to how to remove the unseen bastards?

Re: Stinky tonsils

I actually got a small syringe, no needle, of course, fill it up with water and squirt it into the tonsil grids. It seems to dislodge the particles.

OK...went to walmart got a 30 lumen flashlight, quetips, NaCL nasal spray, and a water flossing device, came home and sprayed the NaCl on tonsils, probed at them with quetip, and a couple probes later some small bits were coming out, then i went all out and pressed pretty firmly on my right tonsil with my finger(empty stomach and a few practice tries will get you used to and avoid the gag reflex) and the floodgates opened, probably 1cm ball of grayish white crap came out. I washed everything out with listerine, sprayed water in tonsils and everything is tasting good again. All of my problems were with my right tonsil, which leads me to believe some food got caught in there and has been fermenting for awhile, but its clear and i now know how to deal with it. Hope this helps!

Oh and I think i have a theory as to how it gets caught in the tonsil. I'm one of those few people who has this weird nasal sensitivity to bright light after being in dim light for awhile that causes me to sneeze a few times, and I think I might have had some food in my mouth or throat when I sneezed and the tonsils look like they are angled perfectly to potentially trap any particles as they rush up to the nose. I am 21 and have never had this problem in my life, so I think this freak explanation fits best.

Re: Stinky tonsils

Don't over-irritate them. They are prone to infection.

Smile Re: Stinky tonsils

I have experience tonsil stones for years. During my teenage years, I had extremely bad breath and I truly believe that it was a result of the tonsil stones. I would ask my doctor about the weird things in my tonsil and she would tell me to just gargle with salt water. I switched primary care physicians and was told to gargle with salt water also. I go to the dentist regularly. I brush my teeth 3x a day. Why did I still have bad breath? I am now 27. I am on my 3rd primary care provider and she is also telling me not to worry about the tonsil stones because they are harmless. She was waving at her nose when she was telling me this. Really? I have tried rinsing my tonsils with a rechargable gum irrator. I have tried various mouth rinses. Some of these tactics were just temporary, meaning the freshness probably lasted about an hour. I will be 28 later on this year and I refuse to not know what was going on with my tonsils. They were always swollen. Fluid was always leaking out of them. I even found it hard to breathe at times. My doctors have always given me nasal sprays, sinus medicines, and antibiotics whenever I had severe problems. This was weird to me.

After reading a couple of healthboard threads, I decided to visit a ENT doctor. I had never heard of this before. I was in the office for 30 minutes, with my first ENT, and he asked me if I had ever taken an allergy test. After years of going to my primary care physician, I realized that I had not. He then told me that he needed a blood sample to make sure that I wasn't allergic to anything. He ended the session by looking down my throat. The words out of his mouth were, "You have cryptic tonsillitis and your tonsils have to go." The tests came back in one week and determined that i WASN'T ALLERGIC TO ANYTHING. The ENT's nurse then scheduled me for a tonsillectomy. I am now on day 6 post operation and relieved that finally someone was able to diagnose what has been wrong with me for all of these years.

My advice to always visit a specialist whenever you are have certain problems. I thought that a Primary care doctor knew everything. I was so wrong. I have had chronic cryptic tonsilitis for years and was never diagnosed. Just think, when the wound sites are healed, I will no longer have tonsil stones. YEAH!
