dentist wants bone on roof of mouth shaved (HELP)

has anyone had to have the bone in the roof of their mouth shaved down for dentures my dentist said I will need it done for my dentures to fit properly. But I have looked online an can't find any information on it. I broke my nose really bad as a kid from a snowmobile accident and actually had to have most of it stiched up with over 50 stiches and Iam a little scared of having that bone touched due to it being so close to my nose, my nose was not set by a doc. my brother actually knocked it mostly back in place with his knee so Iam unsure of how stable that whole area is. would like any help.

Hi - my suggestion, since you have compromised bone, is to get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. I have NEVER heard of shaving the bone - this can result in a severe infection.
Please keep me updated?

Actually I hear it's a common practice, but I do not personally know anyone who has had it. But I know a certain percentage of the population has to have it done in order to be able to wear an upper denture. Could you maybe ask the dentist or oral surgeon if they have performed it before, and can they refer you to a couple of their patients who had the procedure so that you can get feed back from them, and learn about discomfort, pain, recovery time, would they do it again or what ever. Sure could not hurt to ask. Good luck to you Marti

I think Deli has the same thing at the top of her mouth, and she is doing research on it. Maybe she will get back to you with some insight. Marti

I'm not positive we are talking about the same thing, but it sounds like it. I have a "torus palantinus" which is benign bone growth - if you look it up on the internet by those words, you should find. Marti is right, about 20% of the population is affected. So, if you feel bad when you don't win at the lottery, think of this as your special gift in life
I am going to discuss this with my oral surgeon and dentist. If they can put it down as medical, I might go for it - my dental plans are maxed out at the moment. I would certainly mention your earlier encounters to the doctors, but the one may have nothing at all to do with your earlier trauma.

Good luck - I'll let you know if I find out any more. I do know that although mine is not large, it is just enough to have to use adhesive on the top. If "adhesive free" is in your hopes, it might be worth pursuing.

Take care,
Debbi

Dely, Queenb had a tori and had it removed. Check the thread I started earlier: "have you started your implants yet" Marti

Re: dentist wants bone on roof of mouth shaved (HELP)

Thanks Marti - when I read Queenb's posts, I understand he to say that she had the tori, but it's on the bottom of her mouth.... don't know if I'm interpreting the facts correctly (been a LONG week), but although each may be a tori, the difference of the location (sides of bottom, versus top of mouth), may be like comparing oranges to apples. Still trying to figure out the difference. I'm calling the oral surgeon's office tomorrow, and check out the insurance info on it, and ask them a few ??'s. BTW - thanks for the compliment the other day on my writing, I have wicked little fingers that can really fly when I put my mind to it . I was surprised when you mentioned English is your second language -- I would never have guessed. Your posts are usually full of good information, and they read just fine!
Take care!

Thanks Deli, I've been in the good old US a long long time !! Actually learned english in Texas, so I have a weird accent, I am told. Hope you find the info. you need on the tori. And you are right, I think queenb's is on the lower, but I'll have to read it again also. Marti
