teeth whitening and gum pain - Dental Health Message Board

Hi there,
I have been using a professional whitening system given to me by my dentist. I had to have impressions to make my trays and then I squirt a small line of gel around the trays and stick them in for an hour at most, twice a day. I have only used it 3 times but my gums are KILLING ME when I put them in!! They feel like they are burning and they are so red right around my teeth. Is this normal? Will it go away?? My teeth aren't sensitive at all but my gums hurt so bad.

You may be getting the bleach on your gums. That is what is causing the redness and sens. You need to put less bleach in your tray or this will keep happening. If you notice it coming out the top or anything make sure you wipe the gums of with a wet washcloth after you put your trays in. When i give bleaching instructions i tell the person to place little *** on the front surface of each tooth instead of the line.I think you don't over load the tray as easy. Good luck and i hope you get them feeling better. I would stop bleach for a little bit and get you gums healthy again and then start again. One other thing that i could be is the trays are to long and the are rubbing your gums and causing them to become irriatated. check that too.

Thanks brwneyez9, I know it's not the trays for sure. It only burns really bad when I put the trays in for the first five or ten minutes. The thing is that I don't even put the amount of bleach in them that they say to. The directions say 1/2 to 1 whole syringe each time but I use less than 1/2. My mom is a dental hygienist and she said to wait till Monday and then call my dentist and see if there is something i can put on my gums to stop them from being burned by the bleach. Do you know if there is anything they can give me?
