dry mouth

my mouth is always dry and it always has this "taste" that i cant explain. 15minutes after i brush my teeth, the "taste" will be back. using mouthwash doesnt help either. this "taste" is making feel i have bad breath. im getting paranoid because of this. i always have to chew gum just to be sure that people wouldnt smell anything nasty. i feel confident talking to people up close only when i've got candy or gum in my mouth.

1. whenever i have this taste in my mouth, does it necessarily mean i have bad breath?
2. how will i know if i have bad breath? asking people close to me about it is out of the question.
3. what can i do with my dry mouth? i tried mouth moisturizing gel but i doesnt seem to help. is there any medicine i could take?

tnx

Re: dry mouth

You might have Sjogren's Syndrome, which is diagnosed by a rheumatologist who does a lip biopsy. Are your eyes dry too? Regular mouthwashes contain alcohol, which is drying. Try using Biotene mouthwash and toothpaste. That might help with taste in mouth too. Good luck.

Re: dry mouth

I am sorry the Biotene products do not help. I have Sjogren's and also had a salivary gland removed so know first hand about dry mouth. Especially at night when everything shuts down. I carry bottled water with me, I use a spray for dry mouth from Walgreens, I use mouth gel at night and keep water at hand, I sometimes use lemon drops (sugar-free), and of course Biotene products. Sometimes your medications cause this - antidepressives, antihistimins, blood pressure, etc. You need to tell your doctor about this as you don't want your teeth to decay, which happens with a dry mouth. Look up dry mouth on the Internet as there are many causes for dry mouth. Best wishes and take care.

Re: dry mouth

If Biotene does not work, see if you dentist carries this line of product call Omni Control RX toothpaste. It helps with dry mouth. Don't use any mouthwash containing alcohol because that dries your mouth even more. Are you on any prescription medications? Some meds cause dry mouth.

Re: dry mouth

Dryness,

Do certain foods such as citric or spicy foods seem to bring out your bad taste more? When you say dry mouth, are you talking like cotton dry when you mouth has a hard time staying moist with saliva?

Re: dry mouth

Evoxac or Salagen, which are prescribed by either dentist, rheumatologist. Look up Xerostomia on internet or Sjogren's for a lot of information on dry mouth.

My wife has dry mouth but it is from radiation treatments. She has been told to do so many things that I wonder if the doctors (oncologists) have any idea what is going on. Pilocarpine is supposed to make your mouth moisten. Another is to gargle with one teaspoon of salt in a glass of water 4 times daily. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and at time of sleep. Chew gum. My wife has become so depressed that other medical problems unrelated have popped up. Attitude and the desire to get better is the only medicine. It may or may not work, but that's all you have.
