Swollen gum around a tooth that has had root canal. - Dental Health Message Board

Hello..I have had quite a bit of trouble with this tooth. It become very sore a month or so ago. It felt as if it had pressure underneath it. Cold or warm water didn't effect it, in fact..I used ice to keep the swelling down. When I went to the dentist he did a root canal. He didn't do a very good job apparently and I'm having more problems. I called him and he gave me some antibiotics which I am taking now. The swelling is gone from my jaw and throat area, but the gum encircling the tooth are swollen quite a bit. The gum is swollen to half the size of the tooth between my jaw and the tooth. The antibiotics don't seem to be helping this. Any suggestions? The tooth is the second molar in front of my lower wisdom tooth.

Hi Arky!
I had a minor swelling after a RC too. What kind of swelling is this though? "Soft and wattery" or hard and "tissuey"? I had the latter. No other complications, just that. I'm guessing sometimes it could be like an allergic reaction to the filling. Mine went away after a few months completely.
You can try rinsing with a very mild dilution of peroxide. Only 10 (water) to 1(peroxide). It kills bacteria.

Did you go to the dentist and have it checked? Sounds like gum inflammation and it may need cleaned out around that tooth.
