Can you have an impacted wisdom tooth extracted under a local anaesthetic?

Hi all,

I've been feeling this pain on and off at the back of my lower jaw and I suspect it's my wisdom tooth that's playing up. I know this tooth is impacted and I have been a bit scared to mention this pain to my dentist in case he suggests extracting the tooth under a general anaesthetic. I hate them, every time I have a general anaesthetic I'm sick for days afterwards.

I was wondering if it's possible to have them removed under a local anaesthetic? I don't mind the whole pressure, crunching thing etc, I just want to able to walk out afterwards feeling fairly human.

Thank you.

Yea i know the dentist around where i am will not do that. Trust me you don't want to be awake for that. Depending on the type of impaction (soft tissue or boney).Soft tissue being it's just under the gums boney meaning that it still under the bone still. They are going to have to cut open the gums and work that tooth out. If it's impacted it's going to be more then just cruching and cracking sounds. Well good luck with that.

Re: Can you have an impacted wisdom tooth extracted under a local anaesthetic?

I had 2 of my wisdom teeth extracted under local anesthetic and did fine. They were completely under the skin. It just took about 5 injections. It really wasn't that bad. My reason for doing it that way was because I was young and didn't have dental insurance at the time and wanted to save money! If I had to do it again, I'd do it the same way.

Good luck!

Re: Can you have an impacted wisdom tooth extracted under a local anaesthetic?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've been to my dentist today and he said it isn't my wisdom teeth which are causing the pain but I do in fact have TMJ and myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (whatever that is).

He did say to me though, that if I do get a problem with my wisdom teeth, I would be able to get them extracted using a local anaesthetic even though they are completely under the gumline. He said that it wouldn't be one be the most pleasant experiences of my life and I would have to go into hospital but I can certainly choose to do that. I was very relieved.

Thanks again for your replies.
