Advice on swelling?? - Dental Health Message Board

I had my two lower wisdom teeth removed over 20 days ago now and I have this swelling that's come up on one side around the extraction site which feels as hard as bone! There is still a small hole in the gum also.
Is it normal for this swelling to still be there?

You and me both fixxxer. You, wisdom teeth... me, a damn molar. The area is still swollen, hard, painful... the hole in the gum is a nuisance to keep free of muck and debris. Jaw bone and cheek still feel swollen and stiff...., so i dunno mate. Most of the posts around here seem to follow-up only so far. I've been through the archives extensively, pulling up every extraction/dry socket/etc. thread i could find..., and so far can only surmise that for a variety of reasons.. some extractions just don't heal as well as others. No help, i realise. I can only suggest that you are not alone in your frustration with your extraction experience.

A follow up from my extractions which were last June. I had 2 wisdom teeth on one side and on the other side, the two wisdoms and the molars next to them taken out. My gum seemed to be swollen for a long time and i had a slot (hole) where the two sides of the gums which swelled up came together. It felt hard in parts but the dentist told me just a week or two ago that the hardness was gum tissue and the appearance to me of swelling was my gum growing over and collapsing where the bone was gone. When i look in my mouth now, one side seems much larger than the other (what i would think was swollen but it has been 6 months so I doubt it is still swollen).The good news is that it doesn't bother me except when i look inside my mouth in the mirror which is not often anymore.
Anyway,mine is a report more than a few weeks out. I am not sure if it is too late now for you but I took papaya and pineapple enzyme pills which is supposed to help with swelling. I think it did in my case as I had very little pain or tenderness.
