Wisdom teeth - IV Sedation

Getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed tomorrow... Being "knocked out" via IV Sedation... Anyone have any expierience with IV sedation, its risks, and its aftereffects... I'm surprisingly more apprehensive about being sedated (I don't like be "forced" to sleep) than the procedure itself...

Re: Wisdom teeth - IV Sedation

I had no problems with it. I went in, they gave me some laughing gas, then put in the IV (which I hardly felt and didn't care about). Then I said goodbye to my dad and the next thing I remember is walking in the hallway after they were all done. No drowsiness or nausea. The dentist told my dad it took a lot to put me out, but I wasn't aware of anything. I've heard that most people are kind of drowsy for the rest of the day, but I came out of it really quick and was wide awake.

If it is really something that is making you nervous, you could ask about just getting novocaine or laughing gas or something, but if you like to be in control of everything I would stay away from the gas. With that you are aware, and you know you feel funny. Once they put in the IV and start the meds, you won't have a clue. You'll just wake up afterward and it will all be over. Good luck.

Re: Wisdom teeth - IV Sedation

I am not sure whether or not what I had was IV sedation...they put a syringe of something in my arm, and 20 seconds later I was asleep. I was so afraid of being put to sleep since it had never been done to me before and I was scared of what it would feel like. As soon as the medicine went in, I began to feel a little light headed, and I turned to tell the doctor that I felt sleepy, and next thing I knew, I woke up with my husband sitting next to me waiting on me to wake up. They said I walked into the recovery area, I dont remember it though. You should be fine. I didnt even have a headache or anything after mine. Maybe yours will be the same. Good luck!

Also, when they put the line in for the syringe to go into, they used a Pediatric needle...it doesnt even pinch going into the vein...you could ask them if they could do that for yours. Then it doesnt hurt at all.

Carrie

Re: Wisdom teeth - IV Sedation

The only time I've had it done was for my wisdom teeth too.

All that happens is they give you a shot. Things start to get a little blurry, and then you wake up. You're groggy the rest of the day and it's best to just stay in bed.

Also, after getting your teeth out, have someone get you a milkshake form somewhere. The doctor recommended that to me, and it was really soothing.

Re: Wisdom teeth - IV Sedation

Got all 4 of them out (1 erupted, 3 impacted) about 4 hours ago, came home and slept for a while, now am in semi-fuctioning mode...

I have to say, that even though I was fairly nervous about the sedation and the procedure, IV Sedation is still the way to go people... I'm not afraid of needles, so he didn't have to use and NO... He put the IV line in, some meds, I suddenly grew very, very calm and we were talking about the Red Sox one minute, and I was in a recovery room watching the Price is Right the next. No nausea, no real dizziness... Just a bit of slugglishness... Didn't fall walking out which is a plus, slept for a while, now just getting some winter break schoolwork (At Cornell University, they take PRIDE in working you to death *rolls eyes*) done. Figure if I can spell words, might as well get this done when im incapable of doing anything else. And I sent a friend on a mission to buy every single flavor of Jello Stop and Shop has... this outta be fun!

Overall, a good expierience for someone who's never had any sort of "surgery" before... If you are worried about the sedation like I was, trust me, and the others here, it's really not that bad.

Just thought this would help for someone who's nervous in the future... Thanks for all the help you guys and older posts gave me... Every once in a while the internet IS helpful!
