preg with extraction Q - Dental Health Message Board

i have an appointment the end of feb with an oral surgeon to discuss having all of my uppers extracted so i can get an upper denture. my reg dentist will be making an impression on the 20th of this month. im 12 weeks pregnant right now and im wondering if ill be able to be put to sleep for the extractions as i am terrified on dentists as it is. ill be seeing my ob/gyn the 12th to discuss it with him but in the mean time im panicking because i dont want to be awake. also, after all of my upper extractions what can i expect pain wise and how long until it will be healed enough for the denture as my insurance doesnt cover immediate dentures. thanx

Hi Noobie,

If it is not critical that you have the teeth extracted immediately, I would wait. Even the simplest extractions cause some discomfort and it would be terrible for you to have to suffer because you could not take painkillers without risk to your baby. I had just one tooth extracted two weeks ago and I needed painkillers- a simple Tylenol would not have done it for me...

I think it really all depends on your ob as to rather or not you'll be allowed to be put to sleep. Anthestia can be risky in pregnancy. I know with my last pregnancy I was having alot of problems with my teeth and my dentist told me that they don't like to even mess with your teeth in the first trimester caz of it causing miscarriage that the 2nd trimester is best to have dental work done since there is less of a risk and they won't usually touch you in your 3rd trimester caz of it causing preterm labor. Does the oral surgeon your goin to know that you are pregnant? Caz I'm sure there will be alot of xrays being done and xrays can cause harm to your unborn baby as well. I have to have some teeth pulled and a partial done and they told me that I wouldn't be able to wear it for roughly 2 months. I don't know if it would be different for a full set of plates or not. The second trimester is the best time to have your dental work done. So if this is something that can not wait until after the baby then this is the best time to do it. If i were you and could wait i would wait until baby got here. You don't know how uncomfortable you might be and you don't want to be taking meds while pregnant if you don't have to. If you can't wait your in alot of pain and discomfort anyways then this is the best time for it. You don't want to wait if it something that needs done. Second trimester is the best time for dental work.

Well I know that severe gum disease has been linked to pre-term labor and cause other problems with my baby so wouldn't that make it kind of an emergency? Id really hate to put it off any longer. I'm an otherwise healthy person and my pregnancy is going great.
