Pain After Injections - Pls Help! - Dental Health Message Board

Hi Everyone, I had been searching the internet trying to find info on some dental problems I am having and came across these boards, at last looks like I have found just the place I'm looking for

I went to the dentist about 5 days ago with a toothache, turns out I had a big cavity in my left bottom wisdom tooth and the tooth in front of it. I received the bad news that my wisdom teeth will have to be removed and the other tooth rebuilt

But for now the dentist put temporary fillings in both the teeth.

The following day I could hardly open my mouth and felt pain down the back of my mouth where the injections were put in. I went back to the dentist and he said this is quite normal as sometimes the muscles can bruise which is more than likely what has happened.

Anyway the past couple of days things have not got any better, they have become much worse! I am now in agony and think something is not right but I don't know what is wrong. I cannot go back to the dentist for a couple of days due to the weekend and then public holiday on Monday. So am hoping someone may be able to help me as to what might be wrong.

Basically up the back of my jaw in the corner behind my bottom right wisdom tooth is extremely painful, it is aching/ throbbing very badly. I can barely open my mouth and I'm in agony even trying to just swallow. I have tried to take a look at it seems as so I have 2 lumpy things down there which I assume is where the injections went in. I'm thinking it has something to do with the injections ??

I don't know but would really appreciate some help if anyone can relate to what I am talking about. I know something isn't right and I'm going crazy not knowing what could be the problem!

Hi Cherylle....I did not have pain but had a problem with an injection. BUT they will often tell you that cannot happen!! Mine just continued to feel like the needle was still in there or sorta 'heavy'. It did not feel right for three soild months, then it eased up about 75% and steadily improved. Nerves can heal oddly like that. HOWEVER since your is getting worse and is pain, call your dentists office in the morning anyway. They should have an emergency number.

Jaw pain from being open for so long or the injections can cause some pain. It sounds like maybe you pain is more with the tooth and not with the injection area. If you dentist put in temporary fillings that usually means they are worried about the nerve of that tooth. Dentist will put a temporary filling in so see how the nerve is going to responed. When taking out the decay he probably got close to the nerve. So the temporary is placed to see how the tooth will responed. If you have pain with that tooth then the decay has affected the nerve of the tooth and would possably need a root canal. I don't know this for sure. That is what my dentist does. So i would maybe ask about that.

I went to my doctor today (as dentist is closed) and he seems to think I have an infection. I have started antibiotics but am still going to my dentist first thing tomorrow.

I did not have this problem before, only since the dentist put in the fillings. Maybe I got an infection through that somehow, who knows. All I know is the pain is unbearable, I have never felt this much pain before! The doctor gave me panadine forte, these help but the pain is still bad. If I do not get relief soon I think I'll go crazy !!

It's like this massive throbbing painful ache, my gum up the back is really swollen, it hurts the area when I swallow, I can barely open my mouth and I'm even talking funny. Thinkg is I don't have a tooth ache, it's in the gum area.

That was what my thought where when i read your post. That the nerve of the tooth is infected. It sounds like they didn't explain that to you. They should have. Like i said before when temporary fillings are placed they are placed for a reason. Usually reason being the nerve could be infected and the dentist wants to see how the tooth is going to responed. If nothing then permant filling is place. If you have pain then root canal may need to be done. If the nerve of the tooth is infected sometime the gums will get a big red bump on them. That is the infection from the nerve of the tooth.
