Exclamation Killer tooth pain - abscess tooth

My question is for anyone who has had an abscessed tooth. How long is toolong to wait to get care for the tooth? Is it possible for the infection to spread to other areas of the body? I had just seen a dentist yesterday over this, he said it was an abscessed tooth, told me to take antibiotics and has scheduled me to have it extracted. I do not have fever, but how do I know if it is truly infected? Any help will be appreciated.... thank you.

Re: Killer tooth pain - abscess tooth

The x-ray will show infection at base of tooth. Is the tooth in too bad a condition to save? If it can be saved, try a root canal. The tooth pain will not relieve until pressure has been released. Your dentist is wise to give an antibiotic to control infection before doing an extraction.

Yes, abcessed teeth can cause infection to scatter thru the body if left unattended. Some people end up with poor health due to bad teeth.

Re: Killer tooth pain - abscess tooth

Marie55, thank you for your response. Do you know how long it might take for the infection to spread? And where all it can spread to? I heard tooth abscesses can lead to brain abscesses. Have you heard of this? The tooth may be savable, but I do not have money to afford the root canal and crown the dr wants to do. No insurance, you see. The tooth being pulled alone is $97. Being a single mom, I can barely afford that. Anyways..... thanks for your response.

As long as you are on antobiotics you should be just fine. My dentist told me that all the infection must be gone before anything can be done with the tooth (i.e. root canal or extraction).

It is possible to get a brain abscess but it is very unlikely, so I would not worry about it. You should be fine. I had an abscess over a year ago, but like you I could not afford it. Instead I just got antibiotics and it cleared up. You do need to eventually do something with the tooth though or it will come back. Mine came back about a month ago, worse than before and I had to get finally get a root canal and I almost lost the tooth.
