Hi Tracey:
I actually had a deep gum cleaning or what they call scaling done a few hours ago for the first time! My teeth have always been ok but my gums horrible with bad tartar!
I was absolutely terrified to get this done and have to say that all in all....(at least so far...as I am still numb) it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. I had the nitris (sp??) oxide and lots and lots of novacaine. The shots actually hurt the most. The hygenist that did this deep root cleaning on me was great at her job and making me feel comfortable as possible. I had the nitrus immediately and she kept asking me if I needed more or less. They also had me take two tylenols and two advils before leaving. I pretty much drifted in and out while the work was done and just had the discomfort of my mouth being open etc. It took about 3 hours and she did my whole mouth at once. I was only going to get the left side (upper and lower) done today but when I was there, she asked if I wanted her to just do the whole thing at once since I was not doing bad...I said sure! I only hope I am not regretting this later on tonight when I start to really feel my mouth again! She did ask if I thought I needed a script for motrin or pain killers as I will most likely be hurting tomorrow....I said "No" for now but they are going to call me tonight to see how I am feeling and said they will be glad to call in a script if needed!
I got a prescription mouth rinse to use every day....and I have to say...my teeth look pretty great. I hadnt been to the dentist in years before a check up last week and than today! I have spaces between my teeth that i never knew I had! All in all I think it was well worth it as I think I have had an infection in my mouth for some time now!
Anyway, hope this helped,....its not bad (so far). I will keep you posted if there are any changes as my numbness wears off!!
Good Luck...and I suggest the nitrus!!
Beth
