Length of time with Temporary Crown..?

About how long on average do dentists usually have you keep in the temp. crown? I have to go one full month like this. Not in pain, just worried it'll fall out by then! They said it's possible and i should hold onto it and bring it with me to the dentist's office asap should it fall off...

Re: Length of time with Temporary Crown..?

I've had my temp crown since last June. After the first one broke off 2x, he finally did one with diff stuff and this one is solid and lasting. The dentist said it would last a year or so.

Re: Length of time with Temporary Crown..?

Wow, I didn't think a temp one would last a year, it's only made out of plaster/"cemment" as they call it! Well it seems to be in there real good so I'm not worried about it, it just hurts like hell if I try chewing on the opposite side and then the bottom row of teeth ram into the top, even if it's just a tad bit, it hurts like all hades!!

Getting sick of not being able to eat real food here!

Re: Length of time with Temporary Crown..?

I've had a lot of crowns out in my mouth and I usually have had to wait 2 weeks while the final is being made.

Your temp will probably hold okay...Be careful when flossing [pull the floss straight through and not up]... and avoid eating sticky chewy foods on that side ( also avoid chewing gum).

Local pharmacies sell temproary dental adhesives like "Dent Temp" or "Tempenol".

IF your temp comes off you can place a small amount of this adhesive in the crown and place it back on your tooth. This might see you through until you see the dentist again.

Re: Length of time with Temporary Crown..?

I have had my temporary crown since May 2002. It is just now starting to crack and I have an appointment scheduled Tuesday to get a new one until the perm comes in.

Re: Length of time with Temporary Crown..?

I have a temp crown now and will be going in to remove the temp this coming week...usually there is a 2 week wait for the crown to come in. I wouldn't keep a temp crown too long - all I know is that when it is removed, that area can get pretty smelly (even with the flossing/cleaning). You don't want to get any bacteria/infection in that area. If you're afraid it might come off, don't chew on anything hard (french bread, hard candy) with the temp crown.

Re: Length of time with Temporary Crown..?

Haven't been chewing on anything hard--just in very bad pain and can "taste" the taste of the crown on the right side of my tounge, the area it's on...
